I ate deep-dish pizza at Chicago's 2 top pizza chains, and one was so good it changed my mind about deep dish

Chicago is famous for many things: tall buildings, great universities, a history of organized crime, and deep-dish pizza.

The two goliaths in this game are Giordano's and Lou Malnati's. I'm no deep-dish expert, but I had my share of the dense, cheesy pie during my college years in the Chicago area. Deep-dish was the pizza of choice at most gatherings, unfortunately for me as I am lactose-intolerant.

Aside from the fact that deep-dish always made me feel sick, I remembered thinking Giordano's was slightly better than Lou Malnati's. But that might have just been because people ate it more.

In general, I never saw what all the fuss was about. Deep-dish just never tasted that good to me.

Vegetarian pizza? This is heresy. The best part of a Lou Malnati pizza is the layer of authentic Italian sausage along with the cheese and the pie crust made with corn meal. If you have digestive problems with pork sausage it might overload your stomach but for those of us who thrive on meat it is essential to enjoying a true Malnati deep dish. Thank God for 1-800-LOU-TOGO.

Best pizza I ever ate was from a shop near our home. It was in one of those wooden storage barns you see for sale on the side of the road. or a Lowes parking lot.

The three young guys who owned it would work in sandles and shorts and no shirt back in the hot kitchen.

The place was as dirty as you can imagine.

Health dept finally shut them down for good.
No one cared about the dirt and grime. This was 20 years ago and everyone still talks about the pizza.

Yes: “Lactose-intolerant Susan visits a creamery. You won’t believe what happens next!”

One slice of deep dish was about all I could handle but I could enjoy several slices of thin crust. Guess it’s the carb load or something. I could never eat a whole stack of pancakes either. Just most of one was plenty.

My intake of pizza has vastly decreased but I still support pizza for other people.

Peach

I realized that I'd disliked deep dish all these years simply because I'd only been eating Giordano's.

What a weird, and weirdly-written, article.

In my nearly four decades living in the Chicago area, I have had my share of pizza, both deep-dish and regular. Which one is best? Well, it's like the late Cajun cook Justin Wilson used to say when someone would ask what is the best wine for a certain dish: "The best wine is kind you like."

“I read once where a pizza critic said that Chicago pizza should be called a casserole.”

I’ve always said the same thing. It is not a pizza.

Although I spent my childhood in Chicagoland, I never got to go downtown for pizza. Best deep dish I ever had was Conan’s Pizza on The Drag in Austin TX back in the early 80s.

Heck yeah! I had my own pizzeria in 1979! But you couldn’t make your own pie!

Didn’t have Frogger but I had pinball, foosball, Pacman and Qix.
