Russia Floats Arctic Shipping Route as ‘Viable’ Suez Canal Alternative
The Moscow Times ^ | 25 Mar 2021

Russia has proposed its strategic Arctic shipping route as an alternative to the Suez Canal after a 400-meter cargo ship got stuck in the canal, blocking one of the world’s key shipping routes and sparking fears of a rise in oil prices.

“If you get icebound, we have icebreakers, well to break the ice,” Rosatom added, attaching an article on Rosatom icebreakers rescuing a cargo ship trapped in the ice in late December and early January.

While sailing the Northern Sea Route cuts about 40% of the distance between China and European ports compared with taking the Suez Canal, traffic along the Arctic route is not yet competitive with the Suez Canal or even sailing around Africa, The Barents Observer wrote Thursday.

If stuck in the Suez Canal, you can always order out some camel burgers and a bag of falafel, and may some cold beer. Stuck in the Northern Sea Route, you will be freezing and chewing on blubber if lucky.

Global warming now good ?

Many people know that big cargo ships are huge pollution and co2 emitters, so if the can cut fuel by 40% that is huge, and shipping costs will also drop

Over on ebay shipping FROM China for most small items is less than sending a postcard TO China.

Oh, I forgot the US taxpayers pay for it due to some ancient postal treaty, designed to assist manufacturers in developing nations.

That did not work out well!
Perhaps he should have brought some extra blubber?

Nice, and considering their NUCLEAR POWERED ice breakers, they’ll have no problem keeping the lanes clear.

Interesting how Russia always STEPS UP to help out the world during a crisis, whereas Biden is playing tiddlywinks and not offering anything to help the stranded cargo vessels.

With savings that huge, it makes you wonder why that route isn’t already commonly used.

Just blow up the ship. Or unload it. And blow it up

This story reminds me of convoys to Murmansk during World War 2...Allied cargo ships carrying supplies to Soviet Union...

I thought they already had an arctic route. Maybe make it a four lane highway.

Another bonus if the ice sheets retreat for good.

Canada has only 2 heavy and 4 medium breakers - all conventional powered, enough for their needs, but not enough to compete with Russia or even by class with their Project 22220 breakers - 5 heavies are nuclear powered (which make US [1 heavy] and Canadian breakers look like a kids toy) plus 5 more under construction, plus an operating nuclear powered Arctic supply ship.

Russia has too great a lead and too much experience to compete with at present.

And that is the very reason NOBODY uses the Northern Route.

I will bet, that would go nicely with a skewer of lamb chunks, baba ghanouj, some falafel, and always some rice...
