The remaining homeless people living along Echo Park Lake were given 24 hours to leave their encampment after protesters clashed with police Wednesday night.
A heavy police presence was still in place on Glendale Boulevard and Park Avenue Thursday morning as a fence was put up to close off the park.
Roughly 30 to 40 tents could still be seen scattered behind the fencing but the people living in those tents were told they would have to leave.
LAPD later declared two unlawful assemblies and gave an order to disperse from Santa Ynez Street and Glendale Boulevard. Police said officers were being assaulted with rocks, bottles and smoke bombs.
Some pushing and shoving was seen on video between police and protesters as smoke filled the air.
Police later dismissed social media reports that “tear gas” was deployed, saying instead the smoke was caused by incendiary devices utilized by demonstrators.

The homeless should be sent to live at the homes of psychiatrists. After all it’s the Major Tranquilizers and ECT that shrinks use that create the vast majority of these homeless. These “treatments” are proven beyond question to cause permanent debilitating brain damage, rendering the victims unable to function.
Maybe Ca should help the homeless instead of sending California stimulus checks to illegal immigrants.
California also budget $28 million four weeks ago to help immigrants arriving from Mexico.
Much as I would like see the homeless helped, I wonder how they can be helped?
Most of them are no condition to take care of themselves much less hold down a job. How do you help them?
The liberals have made an honest conversation about all of these people basically full of political speak. It is nearly impossible to look and study this population and discuss them with any true objectivity to find solid, long term solutions. (oh yeah and I forgot about the illegals I CA--another population). But also on our side (I know for me I do this) we have a tendency to just say get a job or see it as a illegal immigration issue or a combo there of. And that is too simplistic as well. But that is just some of us.
I also believe liberals have also tied the hands of churches that used to help as well. By placing restrictions on them.

Echo Park is just the tip of the iceberg. Was a nice park, a refuge in a cement jungle, a nice like, lots of greenery where you could picnic and play with the kids. Not so much anymore. First, it became associated with local gangs. Then drug addicts.
Look up the history and current status of Skid Row - which is not really a “row” at all it is many square miles south of downtown L.A. sprawled across many city blocks. It’s not really that close to Echo Park, but not really that far either. I think about 6,000 people live there in tents and boxes, with thousands more that come in and out for their own reasons. It is probably the largest open air drug and prostitution market in the world.
For decades the policy of the city has been to just push homeless “down there” and cordon it off. But that policy changed now you can camp outside your local starbucks. They’ll even let you use the bathroom.
It goes back to depression era really; when the once swanky hotels lost all their swanky customers and had to turn into ‘transient’ hotels for people who came to L.A. for temporary work. Over time the transient population became somewhat permanent, and then couldn’t actually pay for shelter so eventually just moved into the streets. It’s now so large and out of control there is little they can do about it.

While I completely agree they shouldn’t being throwing taxpayer dollars at illegals, throwing money at the homeless has been useless. The state has spent over $800 million for homeless people during the pandemic. San Francisco already spends over $300 million each year, even outside of the pandemic. That money is utterly wasted on the legions of homeless people who don’t WANT to live a normal life. Giving them money doesn’t do anything for them except enable them in the short term.
If they wanted to actually put a dent in that problem and the violence problem, they’d invest that into mental health programs for everyone.
I don’t say or think “get a job” ‘cuz I don’t think they can really do one. Many of them can’t even tolerate the rules required for a shelter.
Housing them might be the equivalent of jailing them. They would be confined under rules they don’t like and don’t want to follow.
I do think that turning private and religious charity on to the problem is probably the best way to find some sort of workable solution. I also think that the regulations on this were designed to prevent a solution.
It might be less of a problem if there was actually work for transients, too. But the business laws are configured, hiring them is risky.
Keep them away from the water tank.

Reopen the Mental Heath Institutions for the ones who can not be on their own. The same ones that were shut down in 70s, but with better management. I was told the homeless population increase when those were shut down.
A lot of the mental people I know in my area is due to brain damage from drug abuse. They rotate in out of Jails here and sleep under bridges.
I understand there is a population of homeless people with famlies that live in campers that do work, but can not afford housing. Those people need to be encourage to move to other States were the cost of living is lower.
backstory:
the ‘activists’ (rich hollywood yoots) were showing up at 2 or 3 in the morning, 20-30 cars, blaring their horns in the neighborhood for about 30 minutes and disappearing before the cops showed up (est 40 min response time). The activists outed the homeowners who complained and enlisted homeless to throw red paint on their properties, including also at the city manager’s office. The cars were tracked via license plates - almost all rich yoots driving mommy’s car.
