He was afraid he might be recognized by witnesses in the store closer to his house. Obviously he had intentions of escaping without getting apprehended. 20 miles is safer distance to remain incognito.

Or maybe he didn't want to kill anyone that he might know? But I'm pretty sure if a white guy drove 22-26 minutes out of his way to shoot up a black grocery store in a black neighborhood, the media would have painted the story much differently-"White Supremacist Attacks Black Grocery Store" would be the headline in every newspaper. But when a white looking Islamic guy drives 22-26 minutes out of his way to shoot up a Jewish grocery store in a Jewish neighborhood, a few days before Passover begins no less, the media ignores the possibility that this was a terrorist attack against the Jewish community perpetrated by a radical Islamic terrorist.
