Horowitz: Gov. Noem’s retreat on South Dakota transgender bill shows the need to make red states red again
The Blaze ^ | 03/23/2021 | Daniel Horowitz

Every statewide partisan officeholder in South Dakota is a Republican. The GOP controls the state House 62-8 and the Senate 32-3 — the largest majorities ever. Yet they can't seem to ban castration of minors or prevent men in female sports as part of the loony transgender agenda. What gives? They are plagued by the same business lobby preventing every other GOP supermajority state from protecting its historic cultural conservatism.

Please explain why this bill was good enough for roughly a dozen other states. Please be specific.

She gutted the bill of the two sections that gave it any teeth. As she wants it rewritten, it would be an unenforceable vanity statement that accomplishes nothing.

“You only made it by 14 seconds.”

Wow, didn’t see it was that close! They must have activated her campaign in some way.

She could take the easy way out: sign it and then say ITYS.

Her explanation was a little weak IMO. She blamed the legislature but didn’t seem impassioned or determined about it. Had she spoken directly to the people in her state in a clear and resolute way she would have been more credible in my view. It just seemed like a dispassionate defense on a very important issue to me.

This was a golden opportunity for her to show strong leadership and stand on principle. Instead she couched her argument in terms of a legal defense. She came across as just another equivocating politician.

“But the bottom line remains: The Final Four, among other Special Interests, told her they opposed it, and she CAVED - pretty black-and-white to most conservatives here.”

*************

I think you nailed it.

Please see my #24.

Her explanation was not convincing.

NCAA can pound sand.

The “teeth” required litigation in a court system where the Supreme Court has “legislated” Gay Marriage. We got here because the Communists changed our culture. Let’s give Kristi a hand trying to change it back instead of falling into the Statist traps yet again.

“She could take the easy way out: sign it and then say ITYS.”

I would have done that and gone further, by OUTING the Special Interests, by name, and listing their DEMANDS on the bill. Make it clear that she STANDS UP for the voters of South Dakota, rather than the Special Interests.

But in the end, I’m starting to agree with the other guy here, maybe she simply doesn’t want to run in 2024 and she also doesn’t want to be nagged about running - if so, she played it perfect, the base is now moving on to others.

Are we supposed to believe her own words? Or, just make up what we THINK she means?? 🥴

And we can look at it another way: Are we supposed to believe that the Special Interests - Amazon, Chamber of Commerce, Final Four, etc. were trying to make the bill STRONGER for her and help her win legal battles to protect women’s sports?

Apparently she’s claiming just that.

Neither, people are looking at what she just did in sending it back to the Legislature with orders to gut it.

THAT she did not do.

I think that was the take-away that many people got from her performance. Her snarky “Well Tucker, did you read the bill?” had a really petty tone to it and didn’t exactly bolster her credibility. JMHO

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has sent back to the legislature a hotly contested bill on transgender athletes, asking lawmakers for changes and startling those who view the Republican as an ally in their fight to keep biological males out of women’s sports. The Republican Noem issued a “style-and-form” veto of House Bill 1217, suggesting four changes over concerns that “this bill’s vague and overly broad language could have significant unintended consequences.” “I support this legislation and hope that House Bill 1217, with the changes I am proposing, becomes law,” she said in a Friday statement.

Gov. Noem is spot on with her analysis of the bill.

People need to go beyond the headlines...understand the content of the message and apply logic.

Noem’s goal is to protect women, women’s athletics and the state she represents from the NCAA and Shyster Lawyers.

She was, is and remains the real deal.

Man, Freepers can turn and bite a person faster than an abused dog.

Why don’t we all just give the SD legislature and governor the time to go through the process.

Hmmm, a bit of a streak there. So she’s like McCain in looking at conservative media has her enemy. Very interesting...

preventing every other GOP supermajority state from protecting its historic cultural conservatism

It is not a "cultural" matter to deny that 2+2=3 or 5 if the Party says so.

Saying that men are men and women are women, and that the one cannot be changed into the other, is a much larger issue than "historic cultural conservatism".

Right. Concede defeat before the first buffalo bellows! I gave her the benefit of the doubt here several days ago, but her lame explanation and tepid frozen smile left me cold.
She buckled, plain and simple. Shame on Kristi!

I never had an opinion on her prior, but I can smell a buckle from a mile away, and this one stank.
