To get power they have basically two routes - seize power, or get people to willingly turn over control. They cannot simply seize power in the US - too obvious and too many privately owned firearms. ("There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.")
But they can use fear and emotion to try to get people to cede control. That has been their strategy for decades now. Energy crisis, coming ice age, gun control, climate change, statues, racism, covid... Think about it for a moment - we've seen a never ending stream of "crisis" that must be addressed "right now!" someone's got to "do something!"
They tried climate change before. But it was hard to stir up much sympathy for things that may or may not happen hundreds of years in the future when people are more worried about next month's mortgage.
Now maybe covid set a precedent. Yes, climate change would be the holy grail of control - a never ending, no vaccine, don't be selfish it's for the children type crisis they could ride for decades. No-doubt they'll try to revisit or revive it as a means of gaining power. Hard to say if covid has made it easier to cow people into acceptance of loss of freedoms, or harder. Are we ready to openly rebel against leftist control?

unless you live in a sparsely populated area with minimal social interactions, the answer to that question is quite easily discerned; go out for a walk, and note the number of people wearing useless diapers over their breathing apparatus, the primary intake/exhaust mechanism of our existence...
and that’s outdoors; next, go into a populated indoor facility, and beyond any shadow of doubt, you will receive a resounding negative response to your (utterly rhetorical) question...
