A pair of determined rescuers in Digby County, N.S., paddled and swam through a frigid lake Sunday to save a stray dog stranded on a patch of ice. Video from Drone & Co and Carla Smith-Titus.
Video at site.
I got flamed pretty badly on FR a few years ago from a similar story. The dogs were struggling in icy water.
I suggested that while it was a good training exercise, the more humane thing to do for such a panicked and suffering animal would be to dispatch it 100 yards away rather than risking human life.
As I recall, in the story I commented on there were two dogs and one died a pretty horrible death
You were justifiably flamed.
I don’t think so. The animals were panicked and struggling. What if the surviving dog in its panic bu=it one of the rescuers.
And one of the dogs died a pretty horrid death when it could have been humanely dealt with well before that.
You are human in a purely biological sense.
Let’s leave it at that.
Sorry you don’t see things the right way.
Human lives are far more valuable than any animal.
Humane is to treat the animal with care and in that case, care was to dispatch it, just like you do when your cat is sick and won’t get better.
I’ll call this one in Canada differently. The animal was not in pain nor was it suffering in any real way. The rescue was the proper thing to do, plus is was a good training exercise.
X2 on that. All lives matter. You can judge the quality of a society on how they treat the unfortunate and the helpless. They rescued a healthy but unfortunate pup. Good job!!
Didn’t Al Gore warn us about this?
