I just want something that will drop a racoon on the top of my garbage cans without waking the neighbors. Is there something that isnt a toy out there for 3-400?

You could probably hook up a combination of a motion sensor and parts from a microwave oven. Just be sure to turn it off when you take the trash out. Search on “magnetron gun”.

Watch the sales. You can get a good entry level crossbow capable of dropping a deer for under $300. Be careful of state laws. Places like NY have regulations about limb with, lbs of draw and lengths. They are not always in the published specs like limb length. Most will measure axle to axle but NY goes limb tip to limb tip.

As with all governments trying to regulate weapons, they are clueless. For example, to hunt in NY the draw has to be between 100lb and 200lb. It was intended to limit the power. You can actually buy a crossbow that has a 180lb draw that is more powerful than one with a 205lb draw. The cams are the key.

A good pump pellet gun will do it. I have one for rabbits that is quite effective and doesn’t wake neighbors.

You’ll find some in that price range. Check Basspro/Cabelas or Gander Mountain for ideas.

Yes, big bore pellet guns that cost right around 3 to 400. You don’t even need to go big bore. You could get a .25 caliber one which has plenty of knockdown power. I’ve seen videos of .25 taking down 400 plus lb pig.

There are 2 kinds, one with just a pump action to fire. One with a tank. The tank ones pack a bit more punch I think, but you need special gear to fill the tanks with

I’ve a,so seen a .22 caller pellet gun take out many pigeons at 200 yards. That is pretty impressive. I’m sure the .25 can too, as can the bigger bore ones

Considerate of neighbors. Always a good policy.

For that purpose I would get one of the new pellet rifles.

For less than $150 you can get a 22 cal break-barrel gas piston rifle that doesn’t make that much noise and will drop coon sized game in their tracks. As a bonus $20 will get you enough ammo for 500 shots!
