Why You Should Eat a Banana Each Night Before Bed

Ready to crawl into bed after a long day of "normal human" cosplay? Hoping to fall asleep fast instead of staring at your ceiling for hours? You probably already have the ingredients you need for a dietitian-approved bedtime snack that'll help you drift off. s a strong case for a banana with peanut butter as the best snack for better sleep.

What a dietitian wants you to know about eating before bed:

What you eat before bed and how soon before bed that you eat it can affect both sleep and your digestion. If your food isn't digested before you go to bed then your body spends time that it should be resting on digesting food instead. Elevated glucose levels can keep you awake, Beckerman says, noting that it also depends on how sensitive your body is. She advises against refined sugar and carbs before bed because they can contribute to poor sleep and digestion. But sometimes your brain screams "feed me cookies" after a stressful day because refined sugars and carbs will give it a rush of dopamine. A banana with peanut butter is a bedtime snack that can actually help you sleep better.

Not only are these ingredients a delicious pairing, they also help each other shine. "Bananas are high in potassium and magnesium, which can help your muscles relax," Beckerman explains. (Most of us aren't getting enough magnesium.) Nut butters contain tryptophan, an amino acid that gets turned into serotonin in the brain, and is a precursor to melatonin. Eaten together, the carbs from the banana can make tryptophan more available to your brain and increase your ability to sleep. "This treat is a sleep aid wonder," she says.

Pickle juice will unlock them fast. Weird but very effective advise from my PCP who’s also an NBA team doc.

I used to have real problems with GERD before, years ago, I followed some advice I read here on FR and stacked 9 2x4's under my mattress to elevate my upper body slightly.

No more GERD!

I did the first layer that consisted of 4 , then a layer that consisted of 3 and a final layer that consisted of two.

Same problem here. And peanut butter would make it ten times worse! Thank God for omeprazole...

Way back in my Drum Corps days, they fed us half a banana every day, to keep from cramping.

That's probably why I don't particularly like bananas these days.

Pickle juice is high in sodium, not potassium.(Both electrolytes)
There is a natural balance between the two as sodium controls levels outside of the cell membrane, and potassium inside the membrane.

my mother knew someone who ate a banana before bed, and died. she blamed the banana and we were forbidden to eat them after dinner. she’s probably rolling in her grave at the suggestion to eat before sleeping!

Why do you need a snack before bedtime? Are you so thin that you have no extra energy saved up around your tummy or on your derriere?

Or do you eat, not because you need energy, but because it feels good.

Your body is like a child. Don't let it run your life.

Bicycle Racers insist that bananas are consumed during races not only for the Boost in energy and benefits associated with great periods of exertion, but also... the fact that bananas are one of the few foods that taste the same going down as they do coming up.

Bananas constipate. Not such a good idea.

Bananas

Bananas are a conundrum when it comes to constipation foods to avoid. It’s a matter of timing: Unripe bananas can cause constipation; ripe bananas can help relieve constipation.

Unripe or under-ripe green bananas cause constipation because they still have a lot of starch, which can be hard for the body to digest.

Bananas also contain dietary fiber (pectin), which draws water from the intestines toward the stool.

If someone is already dehydrated, this can make constipation worse.

Those 3 Irish green Krispy Kreme glazed donuts I had before bed last night didn’t help me sleep AT ALL.

Must’ve been the green food dye.

I work my ass off alone outside all day and have no trouble falling asleep at night. Can’t even imagine spending all that time in an office with a lot of people. It’s the office that keeps a lot of people up at night.

Go ahead and eat it ... but be sure to put your bedtime mask on between bites and after you’ve finished ... wouldn’t want the dog to catch the communist Chinese virus. They can, you know. It’s true! “Doctor” Fazi didn’t come right out and say it (not yet anyway) ... but you damn well know he’s thinking it! (saving this “new science” for later when the fear starts to wane again)
