The boy's mother remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while both dogs have been euthanized, officials said
A 3-year-old boy was attacked and killed, and a mother badly injured, by two dogs in their New Jersey neighborhood, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
The attack in Carteret occurred in the backyard of a home around 4:30 p.m., according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and town police chief Dennis McFadden. First responders quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the young boy to the hospital.
The child died at the hospital. The mother, who was said to have suffered severe injuries, remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, officials said.
Neighbors described how the horrific scene played out, as the child was playing in the yard when two dogs attacked. The canines live on the opposite side of the victims' backyard, and somehow got past a fence before going after the boy and his mother.
One man said he could hear the mother's cries for help, but no one was there. Neighbors said the family had recently moved to Carteret from New York City.
No one answered the door of the home where the dogs were said to live. Those who knew the owners said the dogs never seemed aggressive before, and didn't seem to cause too much commotion.
It was unclear if the owners were facing charges. Town officials said municipal records show the dogs were not registered with Cartaret, which is required by law. The local police chief later confirmed both dogs had been euthanized.
"As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor and we pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief," Cartaret Mayor Daniel Reiman said Wednesday.
A joint investigation involving the Carteret Police Department and Middlesex County prosecutor's office remains underway. Anyone with information can contact those offices at 732-541-4181 and 732-745-3300, respectively.\
Unfortunately, I was in Afghanistan when it happened. I did get them evicted from their rental house because they failed to disclose the dangerous breed to their landlord.
Had i been home, the dog would have been shot.
Kill them all, every last one of them
.............................................
Owners too!
It’s the owners that teach them to be vicious.
.......................................
Kill them too!
Dogs dead, breed should be dead. Owners need to be charged with murder, convicted, and executed. Make clear their are consequences to owning these dogs.
........................................
Well and truly said and every word of it!
Jail the owners and this crap will stop.
............................................
Better yet, toss the owners in a cage with a half dozen dogs trained for killing humans.
Trust a dog like that as much as you would a member of the Religion of Peace.
...............................................
Cage ‘em together and sell tickets.
Poor little boy, God Bless him.
I’m 73 years old and have been walking 3 miles or more most days weather permitting. I will cross the street if I see large dogs coming my way. On February 2nd I was on my way home from the park and rather pleased with myself because I had done 2 extra laps around the park, I didn’t immediately see the dog all I heard was, “ Stryker come back.” I jerker my head up and saw a pit bull on the other side of the road cross the street and coming right for me. The owner had the dog off leash and was on her cell phone . I froze and yelled to her to please get her dog. Too preoccupied with her phone conversation she said oh he’s alright.
It was like a dream, I was frozen in terror as the dog first barking, then growling came toward me. The dog latched onto my hand while I continued to beg for the owner to help me. Finally she called to the dog and the dog took off down the street. It took a few minutes to realize I had actually been bitten when I saw the blood dripping from my hand.
When I got home I called animal control but we never found the owner of the dog so I had to get the full set of rabies shots. Now I am afraid when I go for a walk and admittedly am going less frequently. I bought pepper spay but some have told me that would only make the dog more aggressive.
He was giddy about his Dog nearly killing another Dog?
Who are these people?
The Dog of Peace. It doesn’t matter if you train a pit bull correctly or not. They’ve been bred with a kill switch that flips on at random.
....................................................
A woman with a Pit rented a cabin next to my place at the lake. She could barely restrain it on its leash. When I saw it I told her in a convincing voice that I intended to kill her dog at the first opportunity. She reported me to the State Police. They called and asked me not to do it. Within a week she and the dog were gone.
you get a double barrel shotgun shoved in end of your choice and then pull trigger, both of them.

OUCH!
I’ve been bit by dogs about a dozen times, it’s not fun. German Sheperd, Doberman, Collie, Border Collie, Chiuahua, Lab, one white one the size of a lab but not sure what breed and a couple of dunnowhats. Fortunately not by a pitt.
First one was when I was 10, neighbor’s collie shredded my lips, 54 stiches to close it up. 48 on the outside you could literally cover with a dime, 6 inside where it ripped the inside away from the lower gums. Inch long rip. I knew instantly it was unintentional, I was the only kid in the neighborhood who didn’t pick on the dog, he was glad to see me and got carried away. Bit me right in the mouth. I got lucky, a plastic surgeon was on duty at the emergency room. He did a very good job. I can barely see the hairline scars across both lips.
First time I ever heard of a Pitt Bull it was on the news in Houston, a 4 year old boy was attacked by one and a neighbor got it on video, not common in 1977 or so. The boy ran down the sidewalk to go play at a friends house 2 doors down, the dog’s owner didn’t latch the gate well enough, dog hit the gate and it opened, he had the boy by the left arm before anyone coould react, shook him around like a rag doll. By some strange coincidence a neighbor got it on video tape. Video cameras were not cheap or common in the late 70’s’
The people of Houston passed around a petition to have the breed banned, but never got enough signatures for officials to pay any attention. As far as I’m concerned only two signatures should have been needed, the boys 2 parents.
Last time I heard anything, about 2 years later he was going into the hospital for his 5th reconstructive surgery, the doctors had already told the parents he would never have full use of his left arm. So he will never play baseball or basketball, never play guitar or piano, or most instruments, will not be able to shoot a bow or rifle or shotgun most likely, won’t be able to do a lot of things most people take for granted. How do you shuffle a deck of cards if your left arm won’t work? The military will tell him no thanks, we only accept whole people. Now get a good left arm and tell us you’re a gay pink and yellow cismale who thinks he is a bisexual gecko, you’re in.
The town I lived in before moving back to Texas about a year before I left had so many problems with Pitt Bulls they finally enacted a city ordinance. According to the newspaper article, it required owners to keep their dogs inside a 8 foot chain link fence, any time the dog is out it must be on a strong leash no longer than 4 feet, and wear a muzzle that will prevent any attempt to bite anything. First offense $500.
After Michael Vick was arrested for keeping 24 pitts for the dogfights, every black thug in town had to be just like Vick, dozens of them had pitt bulls. I say thugs, that’s what most of them were, not a great neighborhood. 4 bicycles and 3 car stereos stolen in just the month my bike was stolen, off my front porch. Several would walk their dogs down our street. Actually the dogs dragged them down the street. One came by one day, visibly leaning backward against the leash (before the ordinance) and told my next door neighbor ‘I bet you’d sh!t if he got off the leash’. Neighbor said nope, he just picked up the .357 he kept beside him and said go for it. The guy never walked his dog down our street again.
A story hit the news about a 12 year old boy, I think in Ohio, killed by the pitt bull he grew up with. Around the same time period. My neice worked at the local pound. She brought home 3 pitt bulls. I begged her to take the damn things back. Oh no, they’ll put them down”. She wasn’t impressed when I told her that’s exactly what they need to do, those dogs are dangerous, vicious and unpredictable. They have been bred to be vicious for over 1000 years. A year later one of them bit a friend she was talking to while standing at the window of her truck, for no reason. I think she lost a friend. One, same dog I think, killed a neighbors dog (in florida). Same dog snapped at me one day when I was replacing the plumbing in her trailer, she was at achool, her father was with me. (before she moved to Florida) I told him I was going home, next door, to get my shotgun, he better make sure the dog was put up in the bedroom where he was supposed to be before I got back. They made sure the dog was closed up in a spare bedroom after that. I always brought the shotgun with me when I came over to work on the pipes. Only took a few days, but it only takes one bite.
Yet another one in the neighborhood where I live now belonged to a neighbor, I had told him several times he needed to keep his dog in HIS yard. “Oh no, shes just a big baby, wouldn’t hurt anybody”...yeah right...
I rode by on my bicycle one day, the dog that usually barely noticed me and just lay on the corner napping, suddenly with no warning jumped up and lunged at me, snarling and trying to attack. I kept lunging at her with the bicycle, she didn’t know what to think about the bike, and stayed about 6 - 8 feet away. Yelling for help got nobody’s attention so after 5 minutes or so I called the sheriffs office, I happened to have my cell phone that day. According to the time stamps on the two calls, 27 minutes later the sheriff’s deputy finally got there, the dog was STILL barking, snarling and trying to attack me. That finally got the guy’s attention, he tied his dog up. (I had to call twice, after more than 20 minutes I wondered if they were actually coming. It was actually 27 minutes, he showed up while I was talking to the dispatcher.)
I’ve watched a half dozen documentaries, the video of the 4 year old boy being thrown around like a rag doll was very disturbing, I’ve had to deal with a couple of aggressive pitt bulls, but fortunately have not been bitten by one. They break bones. They can exert enough pressure on their jaws to break bones, and they do. They don’t bite then run away and come back to snap again like other dogs do. I’ve seen that way too many times. Up close and personal...They grab and hold on, shake their heads, which allows their teeth to dig in deeper, and bear down on those jaws until bones are crushed.
Sorry about the long post, but I’ve been around several agressive dogs, not only pitts, theres a lot of info out there, and this is not all of it either. I’ve been chased and/or bit while riding a bike many times, usually just chased. Every breed of dog you can think of will chase a guy on a bicycle. Got bit a couple of times. Why don’t people just keep their damn dogs in their OWN YARD? After being chased, bit, harassed, woke up at 3am so many times, I just hate the damn things. Not to mention the dozens of times I’ve had to pick up the garbage all over my yard because some neighbor lets his dog run loose and the thing dumps my trash can and scatters it everywhere...same pitt bull that tried to attack me did that to a neighbor on a regular basis. Owner knew it, still wouldn’t tie his dog up.
How stupid is that? We told him a half dozen times his dog was digging in the man’s garbage, scattering it all over his porch, he still would not do a thing to keep his dog in his yard. Another was killing a neighbors chickens...same thing, wouldn’t tie the thing up...Yes it was a pitt bull, but they are far from the only ones that will kill chickens, the same person has another dog now that just killed the same guy’s chicken a few days ago. Completely different breed. I know because I watched the dog run across his yard, chicken in mouth when I turned onto our road to go home. That is legal grounds for a shooting, cops told me that. Chickens are considered livestock. Owner can legally shoot the dog if he has a feather in his mouth. I got that info straight from the same deputy who came to help me when I had to use a bike to fend off a dog attack.
Again, apologies for the long post. So much info there...
The man had a pet chihuahua that survived by eating the man’s eyeballs.

And here it is almost lunchtime!
Pepper spray won’t make a dog more aggressive. It works. Be sure to get the kind of spray made for humans, because the sprays for animals are made more mild. Animals have more sensitive mucous membranes. But you need to spray the dog, before it bites. It might not make the dog release after biting.
Some people go the route of buying a pistol, getting self-defense insurance (like USCCA) and spending many hours on a range before carrying. If you do that, be sure to check your state’s law in regards to defending against dog attacks. A study of dog anatomy is also necessary.
Also remember that you might receive some flak from the weirdo political animal worshipers, if you defend yourself against a dog. But you’re in your seventies, so I doubt that they would have much of a chance against you.
The younger generations have handed us a messed-up society for sure, but the libertines in our generation had something to do with that, too.
Have you noticed the reticence to name the breed of these dogs almost rivals the media reticence to mention the races of the “youths” who frequently attack in large packs?
...............................................
I’ve noticed, and I’m convinced it’s because there’s a preference for these vicious breeds among Gang Bangers and others holed up in the ‘hood.
bought pepper spay but some have told me that would only make the dog more aggressive.

What you should be prepared to do is make the dog DEAD, and for that you need a handgun. Think about that next time you vote.
Problem is, the greater portion of owners will be of one “protected class” or another.
Witness Whoopie Goldberg’s defense of Vick, by saying that “dog fighting is just part of the culture”.
As always, the innocent will suffer for the sins of the guilty, be it people who are attacked by dogs or the dogs themselves, who, in better homes, would not have become a danger to anyone.
In the end, I know that what I propose will NEVER happen.
They’ll just kill the dog to somehow “make it right” and the owner of the dog will just go get another of the same.
Until the owners of the dogs face hard jail time, the cycle will go on forever.
These are the people who “get off” on dogfighting.
IMO, it’s got something to do with their insecurity about their own manhood.
It’s a good thing chihuahuas are not 100 pounds
Most aggressive dogs ever since wolves came to the campfire
If they were as big as their personality only dogs left would ne them
I hate disappoint to freepers but both so those are poor example of pit bulls and have been crossed with God knows what
Do they have pit Bull traits yes
But decent looking pit bulls no....mongrel pits in a crappy neighborhood
Not a good combination
Very few genuine pits around....that blocky head gets passed around to a lot of dna
I’ve owned and cared for a half dozen I guess....I don’t allow any dog near toddlers unsupervised...
But one thing about pit bulls...two actually
They are dog aggressive....many times me an old man ...has had to get down and choke them out to unlock them....they’ve never been aggressive to me...I knocked one out with a shovel once...he was trying to lock up with my big Rottie who was actually getting the better of him. As I arrived to separate them....when he came to he submitted and rolled on his back and kenneled up....the Rott obeyed and held back as instructed
Two boys having at it...just short of a vet bill
Pit bulls are also good catch dogs even if untrained they will instinctively want to make livestock heel ....which doesn’t help them with local farmers and ranchers...and I get that..
I lied....three things.....bulldogs are dumb....compared to German dogs or poodles.....they are dullards in general
Except Scott style American bulldogs ...smart....but aggressive....very aggressive
I’ve owned all the dogs freepers hate...Rotts, Dobies, Pits, Giant Schnauzers
And so forth.....duck dogs too
None should be around toddlers without close supervision and any of them with a bad streak shouldn’t be family dogs
Little children I think set off a prey button ....sad as that sounds ...in aggressive dogs
I’ve seen it with my own eyes....from a big rott eyeing. A shrill two year ....it’s scared me to the home cause I knew instantly he would hit that child given the chance ....even though his people aggression was moderate guard level...below Good Dobie awareness
Dogs are beasts....they all are.....you die in your trailer alone ....your Yorkie will stay alive eating you
People forget that...
For disclosure many Rotts would die to save the family toddler as would some Pits but Pits are not guard dogs ....not in my experience...Pits as fate would have it more often than not have bad owners in bad neighborhoods and there are so many pit looking critters around.....they are the n word of the dog family ...or white trash if it feels better
Not sure a fair answer here...my answer is when my grandkids are over the Rottweilers are in their kennel locked and the kids aren’t outside without adults
Shibumi ....in your honor
