3-Year-Old NJ Boy Dies After Being Attacked by Neighbor's Dogs in Backyard

The boy's mother remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while both dogs have been euthanized, officials said

A 3-year-old boy was attacked and killed, and a mother badly injured, by two dogs in their New Jersey neighborhood, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

The attack in Carteret occurred in the backyard of a home around 4:30 p.m., according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and town police chief Dennis McFadden. First responders quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the young boy to the hospital.

The child died at the hospital. The mother, who was said to have suffered severe injuries, remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, officials said.

Neighbors described how the horrific scene played out, as the child was playing in the yard when two dogs attacked. The canines live on the opposite side of the victims' backyard, and somehow got past a fence before going after the boy and his mother.

One man said he could hear the mother's cries for help, but no one was there. Neighbors said the family had recently moved to Carteret from New York City.

No one answered the door of the home where the dogs were said to live. Those who knew the owners said the dogs never seemed aggressive before, and didn't seem to cause too much commotion.

It was unclear if the owners were facing charges. Town officials said municipal records show the dogs were not registered with Cartaret, which is required by law. The local police chief later confirmed both dogs had been euthanized.

"As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor and we pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief," Cartaret Mayor Daniel Reiman said Wednesday.

A joint investigation involving the Carteret Police Department and Middlesex County prosecutor's office remains underway. Anyone with information can contact those offices at 732-541-4181 and 732-745-3300, respectively.\

Have you noticed the reticence to name the breed of these dogs almost rivals the media reticence to mention the races of the “youths” who frequently attack in large packs?

Are you kidding? That large, broad head on the black one is a classic pit distinction.

It happened with a family members pit going after my 3 year old daughter many years ago. No one could believe what they saw, as the dog was so sweet, loving and loyal. Thank God I was right there. Safely outside, it repeated the behavior later when my daughter walked near the door. No taunting or even eye contact.

How was that family member's vicious dog then dealt with?

Euthanized?

Regards,

The article you posted mentions that the dogs had been reported several times managing the neighborhood, with no response. If that can be confirmed, it looks like a major lawsuit is in order.

I think I correctly guessed what you meant to write.

Something about pit bulls I don’t know WHY people own them there are certain breeds that are so unpredictable!!

Really? You only have to open your eyes to know the types who overwhelmingly own this breed. They are very popular with the criminal element, particularly drug dealers. Illegal invaders from down south also love to own this breed. I personally know of several incidents of attacks in my city where the owners “no hablo ingles.” It is the third-worlder dog of choice.

True. There was a mobile pet adoption tent set up outside of my local pet big box store. 4 out of 5 dogs up for adoption were pits or pit mixes. I couldn’t believe it.

It’s the owners that teach them to be vicious.

Not necessarily. We had 2 pitbull mix. One male, one female, both rescue puppies They were wonderful until one day a cat got into the fenced backyard. I was in the kitchen when I heard the commotion. They killed the cat and ripped it to pieces. I was devastated. I put the dogs in the kitchen and closed the screen door. I bent over to pick up the cat and Daisy came through the screen and attacked me. Grabbing my arm and shook me like a rag doll. Duke wasn’t far behind and tried to get my other arm. I just happened to get free and back into the house. Several stitches later and a couple of surgeries. We never beat the dogs, or hit them at any time. They were great with the grandchildren. I don’t exactly know what turned on in their brain but they never stopped as I was screaming at them.
It’s a primal urge. Needless to say we had them euthanized. I could never trust them again.

Both of my kids were seriously bitten by dogs, a black lab and a German shepherd (separate incidents).

Both almost lost an eye. My son also lost a tooth, my daughter had a puncture wound inside her mouth.

Both had many stitches. I have pictures.

I would never, ever own a dog. Both of my kids now have families of their own and each has a dog.

"My S-I-L is a firefighter who went on a recovery call..."

In the show X-Files, Scully had a dog, Queequeg, for a few episodes. They had come across it in one of their cases where an old lady died alone, and the dog had ran out of food.

Queequeg was lost in a later episode when it in turn was eaten by something.

They advertise them as terriers. Expect to find sweet rat terriers or jack russells. They are actually pit bull terriers. Zillions of them in shelters. They post playful, sweet loving looks of them. This suckers you in to adopting one.

I’m sure the dog owners will be sued, just as I’m sure you can’t bleed a rock. I’m also sure the owners will disappear while no one is looking.

The attack in Carteret occurred in the backyard of a home...

Did I miss the reporter identifying whether the attack occurred in the back yard of the dogs' owner, or in the yard of the boy and his mom, or in a third family's back yard?

That information would seem to be important to the story.

I saw the article state that the boy was playing in “a yard”, which made me wonder whether the writer was obfuscating or just bad at writing.
