Surgeons wear masks in the operating room to Prevent infections to the patient whose guts would be opened to Human droplet contamination.
Also to protect the surgeon from getting the patients blood in his mouth and nose.
They also wear goggle to protect them eyes from flying blood droplets.

And extreme medical exposure with full PPE is a different situation, but all kinds of hospital circumstances (including the population of workers who had been most vulnerable early on) and approaches were changing in early April, 2020.
The masks are a joke. They are being used as a symbol that “we care”. I see people on grocery stores with them on their chins, under their noses and some people really get into the designer types to show off. I saw a guy drop one on the sidewalk, pick it up and put it back on. We will, someday, look back at this era and roll our eyes. (I hope)

Masks “have not been proven to protect the patient operated by a healthy operating team.” This does not consider that COVID-19 can be spread by asymptomatic carriers. They may feel healthy, but they may be carriers of infection. If my surgical team walked into the operating room without masks, I would have demanded they put on the masks or risk having their medical credentials eliminated so they couldn’t practice medicine ever again. I see surgeons all the time walking around with face shields, masks, scrubs, and gloves, and driving their cars that way too. I see them walking around with their hands extended to prevent from touching things. Oh, that’s right, they only do that in surgery, not even walking the halls of a hospital.

Scientific research done in almost any country except the duplicitous USA has found that masks are ineffective. Read the scientific research, NOT the news or politicians needs.

Anybody can change “results” of any test of any group at any time just by manipulating the numbers. The CDC has been shown to be less than honest about the Covid numbers and their “scientific” writers are not known for being scrupulous.

I’ve had the same well used and unwashed mask in my pocket for at least six months.
However, it’s on the way to being replaced. My wife saw one online that a fine mesh. Completely and totally useless but it keeps the Karen’s happy.

The infections that are being prevented in a surgery are BACTERIAL infections. Common everyday to not so common BACTERIA.
If a surgeon was viremic and able to spread something, likely the fever involved would prevent the surgeon from even gowning up.
