Just noting the considerable difference in rhetorical speech between today's modern military...

'We are human and we messed up. We intended to speak up for female Marines and it was an effort to support them... We will adjust fire and ensure the utmost professionalism in our tweets...'

...to those of, say, Gen George S. Patton in his speech to the U.S. Third Army on June 5, 1944:

All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle...Americans love a winner...Americans will not tolerate a loser...We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b$!!*es, we're going to rip out their living ***da#ned guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks...we're going to murder those lousy *** co*#suc!ers by the bushel fu&#ing basket...we are not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy's balls. We are going to twist his balls and kick the living s#!t out of him all the time. Our basic plan is to keep on advancing...over, under or through the enemy. We are going to go through him like crap through a goose...like sh!t through a tin horn!

“What is this sh$t.”

Communist-inspired hysteria and Fifth Column activity.

Folks, this exchange does not fall into that category.

hinckley buzzard probably meant that as a good-natured poke at Marines, and someone like chainmail has probably spent time being on the other end of that “oh, Marines are dummies-hahahaha-isn’t that funny” line. As long as there have been Marines, that has been thrown at them, though generally it is less common in face to face...for obvious reasons.

The criticism in the “They aren’t known as Jarheads for nothing” line was pretty mild, but longstanding and pointed which is going to sometimes raise hackles.

Maybe chainmail and others who take issue with a barb like that are thin-skinned...fine. We all know what that is like here, being conservatives and unendingly being on the side of being poked by the Left with...oddly enough, the same general stereotypes.

A poster could be just as critical about the military, but do it in quite a different way that would not elicit the same response. I see that all the time. Because only complete idiots think the military (even, or especially their own branch) is somehow perfect. Anyone who has spent time IN the military life sees there is much stupidity, bureaucracy, you name it. The bad sometimes come with the good.

There are plenty of reasons why someone who has experience in the military can and should have the option to bring up the military experience of someone critical, especially ad-hominem criticism.

And lest is it just military, it isn’t. It goes across all lines, whether a poster works on oil rigs or in an operating room.

When someone is leveling criticism in a tone that is either flat out wrong and/or isn’t conducive to a honest discussion of the issue at hand, it is well within the rights of that person to come down in the way they see fit.

My status as an American citizen gives me all the standing I need to engage in conversations like this. This isn’t about narrow technical questions; this is about the constitution.

Can’t un-ring a bell.

Can’t undo bad stuff that happens in warfare either.

The utmost professionalism and discipline is what’s “supposed” to be what any military strives for.

No doubt, that is 100% true. And I did not say or imply otherwise.

But this exchange was not the shouting down of criticism by using the "you haven't served" bludgeon as you characterized it. There was no bearing on the issue at hand in the initial post. That post was an offhand Internet response of the kind we all have fired off at one time or another, most of the time it is met with a diffident shrug.

The issue was the approach to the issue which although it may or may not have been given as an insult, was perceived as such (although, having read Freeper hinkley buzzard's posts for years likely unintended, or at least not as sharp as it was received and not meant that way. If not, he or she will let me know and I'll accept that)

Having read Freeper chainmail's posts in the past, if the criticism had been:

"...The Marine responsible for allowing that comment to be posted to Facebook fits the intellectual stereotype of a "Jarhead"..."

then the response from him would likely have been different. I know that in my shoes, it certainly would have been.

My contention is that your characterization of trying to shut dialogue down with a "you have never served" doesn't fit because the statement "They are called Jarheads for a reason" isn't really dialogue...it is just the way some people have fun on the Internet in forums like these.

Remember the comment by John Kerry something to the effect about lack of education or intelligence and end up getting in the military and sent to Iraq?

Appreciate the fire support, buddy - but “jarhead” is a perjorative and not taken kindly when it’s used. Most often it’s used by sailors and leads to fistfights, at least before they starting adding girls in the infantry.

What “supporting women” in the USMC by accommodating those of them that are pregnant means. Making it easier to get into their pants. Unless you maintain they’ll be the first ones in and the last ones out of an invasion while toting the little wonder in a special combat suit.

Oh yes. You mean this one...

You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.

Yes, the same John Kerry who served as a Navy Lieutenant during the Vietnam War Swift Boat Commander...but not for long. After being sent to 'Nam he devised a plan. He knew the law required that if you received 3 Purple Hearts you MUST be returned home. By golly, he had his 3 Purple Hearts before 90 days had elapsed! One of them required only a Band Aid for treatment. The other 2, not much more. Homeward Bound for Lt. Kerry...where he soon became involved with the group Vietnam Veterans Against The War, known for anti-war marches around the White House where many members threw their Ribbons & Medals on the WH lawn. The Boston Globe reported at the time that Kerry was among the Medal-tossers, but he has since claimed he tossed ONLY Ribbons, no Medals.

Married well...into the Heinz Ketchup fortune. Has some very nice bicycle-riding outfits. To this day, I prefer Del Monte...

Of course I know all that-I have seen it used both as a friendly pejorative with an acquaintance, who calls me a Squid, but I have also seen things brought to a boil between people when it isn’t friendly.

Funny, when I was a little kid, we used to occasionally call the Marines “Jarheads”, but when we played “Army”, we all wanted to be one...:)

Thank God there are and have been exceptions like you said! My dad was in the military for 27 years and retired before the brainwashing, etc. started full force, etc.
