Bummer. Extraordinary talent, hard worker, and decent guy. 66 way too early.

Brockton born. What a monster he was in the ring. My wife was a new reporter still in college interviewed him a couple of times. Nice guy.

Rest In Peace.

I remember him from the early days, when he was coming up in Brockton, fighting guys like Bennie Brisco, and Willie “The Worm” Monroe out of Philly. His trainer was named Petronelli, and there was a young Petronelli coming up the same time as he was, who showed promise, but didn’t hit the big time like Marvelous Marvin.

He lost a few fights along the way, but very few. With the exception of Leonard, he got rematches with each of them, and made short work of them.

Far too young. One of the all-time greats. RIP.

I could be wrong but my impression is boxing doesn’t lend itself to longevity.

I couldn’t find that one, but as the Mom of a man who has made me cringe many times, I like this one.

Agree. Hagler-Hearns enthralled me as a kid. One of the greatest fights ever. I’ve watched it on youtube periodically over the years. RIP champ.

Speculation rampant on Twitter that he died from after-effects of the COVID vaccine.

The person Hagler beat for the title, Alan Minter, also died around 3 or 4 months ago.

The memorable thing about that match is that it took place in London, and because of Minter being cut early and losing via referee stoppage, a riot in the arena ensued.

This is surprising. You never heard about Hagler having the problems typical of retired boxers. He took an Italian lady as his second wife and lived the last twenty years in Milan. Legend taken too soon.
