I saw her in 1960 as Guenevere in the original Broadway ensemble of Camelot, with Richard Burton as King Arthur and Robert Goulet as Lancelot. Although I was a teenager, it was one of those "Well, I can die now, having seen that" moments.

Her talent was discovered when terrified Londoners taking shelter in the subways started singing hymns during the German blitz, and her voice carried over them all. This per one of Paul Harvey’s “rest of the story” spots. She must have been very young then, to be 13 in 1948.

Afrikander school kids, according to Lord Pakingham, after the Boer War, would sing. I think that was in Pakingham’s Boer War. Too long ago to remember accurately. Might have been in White Tribe of Africa, by I forget who. Anyway, here’s the lyrics quoted.
