8 Big-Bore Airguns That Are Powerful Enough to Take Big Game
Field and Stream ^ | August 21, 2020 | Joseph Albanese

Interest in airguns is growing. Maybe it’s because of increasingly restrictive gun laws, the ability of air arms to skirt no-discharge ordinances, or because they’re just plain fun.

Perhaps the most exciting segment of the airgun world is the so-called big bores, which fire projectiles larger than .25 caliber. Make no mistake, these guns aren’t backyard plinkers. They’re serious hunting guns built with big game in mind, producing at least 300 foot-pounds of energy to take deer- and hog-sized animals.

Though only somewhere around 15 states allow hunters to take big game with an airgun, many have had open discussions about permitting the practice in the future. And, most states allow the taking of small game and varmints like coyotes with air rifles. Here’s a look at some of the better big bores available today.

My .20,.22, .25 all sound about like a .22 , if I didn’t have suppressors on them, other wise pretty quit, just a little twang.

“Lead’s easy to come by with wheel weights from a tire shop.”

it depends on what state you are in, my state banned these a long time ago, and new cars do not use lead weights

Lead weights are banned in eight states, predictably they're the nuttier ones. That still leaves 42 states where they're common.

New cars might not come from the factory with lead weights but when the tires are replaced they'll most likely use lead to balance them, unless they're in a nutty state. Used lead weights are very easy to find in my state.

So does mine - but I’m sure the flatlanders will ban them in the future. One progressive Bernie-bot keeps trying.

You can buy an electric air pump to recharge the canister.

If you have too, you can melt down the plates and posts of lead/acid (i.e., car batteries).

I haven’t shot any but, a lot of guys with big bore air guns shoot round balls.

I plan on getting a .357 round ball cast. I’m sure I would lose accuracy but in a pinch I’m sure I could take a deer with it.

These shoot like a dream out of mine.

And small caliber PCP guns go through an air charge fast enough.

Can only imagine how fast a couple shots from big bore drains it.

I suspect the big ones are mostly a single shot and time out to fill the tank again.

And drag a generator out in the field to run it?

Gets $$$ real fast. I use a scuba tank to fill my .22 and get it filled at a dive shop.

My .177 punched a hole clean through a squirrel at 15 yards. He ran up the fence post, ran along the top of the fence rails for maybe 25 feet, then croaked. Varmint fell into my animal-loving neighbor’s yard, so I had to quickly fish it out with a homemade gaff hook before she or her dog discovered the ventilated squirrel carcass.

With some models you just get a few extra canisters to carry with you.

I don't have one of these air rifles, so I'm not the expert. But I looked up a dive shop in my area and they charge $9 to refill a paintball or air gun tank, $12 for a larger tank.

They also charge $9 to fill a scuba tank, but you must have a valid dive card in order to have a scuba tank filled.

You can get high pressure tanks that are the same volume as a scuba, and I am guessing those are the $12 refill.

Now, your next question will be "how many rifle refills per scuba tank?" and my answer is "I dont' know."

Two of my fav reads in F&S are Ask Petzal and A Sportsman’s Life. DEP is still around (he’s too much of a crank to die), but where did Bill Heavey disappear to? Retire? Suffer an ignominious death his family held back, per his living wish? And did F&S cut back their circulation to just a few dead tree editions a year? Bassmaster, American Rifleman, and F&S are staples in my bathroom magazine rack beside my porcelain perch..........
