Interest in airguns is growing. Maybe it’s because of increasingly restrictive gun laws, the ability of air arms to skirt no-discharge ordinances, or because they’re just plain fun.
Perhaps the most exciting segment of the airgun world is the so-called big bores, which fire projectiles larger than .25 caliber. Make no mistake, these guns aren’t backyard plinkers. They’re serious hunting guns built with big game in mind, producing at least 300 foot-pounds of energy to take deer- and hog-sized animals.
Though only somewhere around 15 states allow hunters to take big game with an airgun, many have had open discussions about permitting the practice in the future. And, most states allow the taking of small game and varmints like coyotes with air rifles. Here’s a look at some of the better big bores available today.

Sure, but no matter how powerful the air rifle, I wouldn’t want to have to rely on it if a murderous criminal or tyrant were coming after me.
A .45 @ 950 fps from an air gun is way more than enough. 950 fps is as fast as ammo coming out of a 1911.
Do you need a permit for these?
It is not considered a firearm. You can buy through the mail.
No...but if you are running out .22 long, it is decent replacement. I bought a case of pellets—11,000 of them. I am not running out of them any time soon.
I’ve fired a .45 caliber air rifle. The velocity was around 900 fps or so. All you heard was a “whoosh”. Very quiet.

Ah, gotcha. I figure there aren’t too many FReepers who haven’t stocked up one way or the other by now :)
I have #1 in .22 cal. I have the hand pump too. Need to look at getting the .50 cal!
Neighbor just picked up a Pioneer Air Bow - fires eight 27 inch arrows at up to 450 ft/sec on a charge.
I want the .30 cal full auto.
Did a little research and found out my state, Alabama, allows both air rifle and air bows for hunting
“Lead’s easy to come by with wheel weights from a tire shop.”
it depends on what state you are in, my state banned these a long time ago, and new cars do not use lead weights

Something I have thought about, is mounting something like what you're talking about on a PTZ platform with a camera sighted in for perimeter defense. Especially one that had human tracking and autonomous fire control, once authorized.
There are belt-fed models available. A couple of these positioned for covering each other should slow or deter even a sizeable raiding party.
amazon has it
I would not want to take a raptor pellet from our Gamo varminter.
