Word is this was demonstrated in Japan in WWII. People had kept gold for emergencies, but found it won’t buy bread when there isn’t any.

That’s right: if the US Navy blockades your island, and the US airforce firebombs your cities then Gold will not do you any good.
But not all disasters are the same. The world is sliding into a collapse of fiat currency. Get Gold and Silver.

Only an idiot hoards gold to USE during a collapse. I bet any Japanese that still had their gold stash was much happier by 1948 or so. Gold let’s you rebuild after the crash.
