Kills quickly exceeded statewide limit, forcing the state to end the hunting season early
Hunters and trappers in Wisconsin killed 216 gray wolves last week during the state’s 2021 wolf hunting season – more than 82% above the authorities’ stated quota, sparking uproar among animal-lovers and conservationists, according to reports.
The kills all took place in less than 60 hours, quickly exceeding Wisconsin’s statewide stated limit of 119 animals.
As a result, Wisconsin’s department of natural resources ended the season, which was scheduled to span one week, four days early.
While department officials were reportedly surprised by the number of gray wolves killed, they described the population as “robust, resilient” and expressed confidence in managing the numbers “properly going forward”.
Most of the animals were killed by hunters who used “trailing hounds”, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The state’s overkill was exacerbated by Wisconsin law that mandates 24-hour notice of season closure, rather than immediate notification.
Natural resources department officials also sold 1,547 permits this season, about 13 hunters or trappers per wolf under the quota’s target number. This equated to twice as many permits as normal – and marked the highest ratio of any season so far.
State authorities had a total culling goal of 200 wolves, in an attempt to stabilize their population. As Native American tribes claimed a quota of 81 wolves, this left 119 for the state-licensed trappers and hunters. Because the tribes consider wolves sacred, they typically use their allotment to protect, not kill, them.

More real emotion and outrage expressed by the slaughter of wolves, than the slaughter of unborn babies.
The “New Jersey Cat Ladies” all love those Warewolf and Vampire dramas on the hallmark type shows.
Proving that there’s just too dang many wolves in that area.
What would we do without the Grauniad (sic) being here to remind us that “native Americans” are “protecting” the wolves, as opposed to those evil, rapacious white hunters who just kill them?
Lol, probably, but since the meme is to extol all things “native”, while trashing whites, they’ll never report on that.
I’ve heard them howl here in N/W Ohio. Must be everywhere...
Wolves would be a natural solution to the epidemic of little yappy dogs.
Setting yappy dogs free in the wild could help repair the rube wolf killer.
Since the tribe killed 119 they must have sold them. Not a publicity stunt - tribes are all about the money and leaving US$500K on the table is not their game.
why did the state sell more
Isn’t the answer obvious?
If they got that many in so short a period of time, there have got to be a bleep-load of them around
I’m outraged, too!!! Why did they stop before they eradicated them? There is a reason that our forefathers wiped out wolf populations and drove the remnant population into the areas far from human interaction.
Here in Nevada the anti bear hunting group floods the tag lottery with people that don’t intend to hunt. Consequence is the Sate issues more tags. Which they make money on so everyone is happy - well, except those that don’t want the hunt to happen at all. The PETA types are starting to apply the same technique to deer and pronghorn hunts.
The tribal permits can be used in any of the ceded territory. Most of northern Wis.
Thanks
Let the demons howl. The culling is perfectly legal and needed despite what the muvers erfers think.
50,000,000 human babies slaughtered for no reason. Whatsoever, except for the selfishness of the parents involved In Most cases, and not a peep out of these muver erfers. So spare us the faux outrage muver erfers. We don’t want to hear it
As far as I have been able to tell, the tribe did not kill any wolves.
Nobody I know personally, is in an uproar. ;)
All they guys that hunt with Beau were simply amazed that the hunt was over so quickly. Beau had a wolf tag a few years ago but was unsuccessful. He probably won’t have another in his lifetime, now. He rarely leaves a tag unfilled.
And, yes. This also showed the guys that there are a LOT more wolves than the DNR is letting on. They are one of the hardest animals to hunt down and bay up, let alone actually SEE in the field.
And - no dogs were hurt, either. ‘My’ Oneida (Plott Hound) got in on one of the chases, but he kind of weenied out once he saw what he was up against, LOL! And THIS dog has successfully hunted bear for the past two seasons!
I was referring to both two and four legged predators.
It’s another case of the urban dwellers who have no understanding of nature dictating to the people who actually have to deal with nature.
Walt Disney’s movies are FANTASY :Bambi has probably inspired ,i.e. brainwashed millions of impressionable children(of all ages).
Wolves, coy wolves or other hybrids? How many people can tell them apart?
