Experts sound the alarm on declining birth rates among younger generations: "It's a crisis"
CBS News ^ | 3/3/2021 | Unattributed

New data is confirming a baby boom that some doctors expected was actually a "baby bust." Health departments in more than two dozen states provided records to CBS News, showing a 7% drop in births in December — nine months after the first lockdowns began.

Researchers say it continues a much bigger plunge in fertility in recent decades.

The number of babies the average woman in the U.S. is expected to deliver has dropped from nearly four in the 1950s to less than two today...

While the global population is still growing, a major study published in The Lancet in 2020 predicted it would peak in 2064, and then fall by nearly a billion people by the end of the century — the reason being, fewer babies.

The U.S. is already below the so-called "replacement level" by some measures, meaning fewer young people to support the country's otherwise aging population.

"We need to have enough working-age people to carry the load of these seniors, who deserve their retirement, they deserve all their entitlements, and they're gonna live out another 30 years," he said. "Nobody in the history of the globe has had so many older people to deal with."

There’s nearly 8 billion people in the world. It’s not a big deal if we lose a billion or two by the end of the century. Our economy will suffer though. Take a look at Detroit to give you an idea.

It is the kind of “social distancing” that liberals/progressives/millenials practice that is keeping the birth rate low.

Unless you “have the power” and are a “great shot”, hitting the right target at 6 feet ain’t gonna cut it.

And from what I’ve seen of some millennial women, esp. professionals, even LAZ wouldn’t hit them. They have no motherly instinct, desire, or even knowledge of how to be one.

The one good thing about the pre-late 60’s was that the “family” was a keystone and the building block of the American family.

To day, the “family” means those you drink with at a bar, for the rest of your life.

Glad I never drank. My kids thank me too.

"We need to have enough working-age people to carry the load of these seniors, who deserve their retirement, they deserve all their entitlements [...]

These "seniors" should have had more babies themselves (apparently, they are now expecting the few children they had to give them loads of grandchildren).

Declining birth rates is very serious...can’t see how you can say bastardy is worse.

Declining birth rates are very concerning, indeed - but bastardy is immoral. It is a crime against the bastard child.

Massive immigration will not bail out the USA, as some hope or believe.

In 2019 - before the pandemic - the birth rate for all foreign born women in the USA slipped below 2.1 for the first time in history.

From memory, it came in at 2.02.

The birth rate for USA born women was around 1.67.

Social Security and Medicare are definitely built on the idea that future generations will pay for the old age pensions and health care of previous generations.

Re: Comment #49

I went back and checked my numbers.

The fertility rate for USA born women is 1.69 - not 1.67.

Declining birth rates, as in sub 2.1 TFR (total fertility rate), is equallly sinful as it is a result of abortion and contraception.

Property taxes are a huge problem in high prop tax states.

Who wants to raise a large family in a shoebox?

And if you do buy a roomy, costly home, four and five fig annual prop taxes ensure you can’t afford to fill it.

We need married taxpayers having lots of future taxpayers.

That’s unaffordable these days.

Declining birthrates are not, per se, immoral; one could theoretically simply choose to have fewer offspring.

Abortion is, of course, immoral.

However, in asserting that mere contraception is likewise "sinful," you are adopting a minority position here at Free Republic. (You are, of course, free to do so - perhaps you are Roman Catholic?)

Definitely I am Catholic. So we agree about abortion. Abortion is a much greater sin against God than contraception.

But extensive use of contraception by married couples in a society could be viewed by Protestants as a sign of civilizations weakness? Do u agree with that. Regardless, I view any society with a TFR less than 2.1 as a society either plateauing or on the decline.

Perhaps I did not make it sufficiently clear in my initial posting that I choose to differentiate between actions I view as misguided / counterproductive or "merely" illegal (e.g., an infraction against city ordinances) on one hand and morally abhorrent (you might wish to label them "sinful") on the other.

The over-use of contraception or excessive masturbation may have negative long-term personal and even societal effects, but it would be (in my view) morally reprehensible to attempt to prohibit such practices; one could at most appeal to people on rational grounds to abstain from them.

Abortion, on the other hand, is itself morally abhorrent ab initio.
