My Grand-Daughter is stationed on the Nimitz!
They have been deployed since last March. The whole community is watching.
Also watching https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:359203/zoom:10 which reports the Nimitz has just turned toward port and slowed to 13 knots.

Thanks for her service and all the active, retired and former military folks. Even though we’re now #1 on the terrorist watch list. Thanks joe.

Wow, that’s a long deployment!
Back in my time, a Westpac was 6-8 months, and coming home was really sweet.

Nimitz is a good old boat. I knew the CO back in the early 80s.
Best wishes to your granddaughter!

Thanks for posting this. Watching USS Sterrit (sp?) DDG-104 coming in. Part of the Nimitz group.
I understand Nimitz is currently 20 miles out.

On returning to port in San Diego, passing under the Coronado bridge made the return official, at least to me.
If I remember correctly, aircraft carriers were ported on Coronado.
To: FrogMom
I remember many times when my ship (USS Peleliu) was making that turn into San Diego Harbor.

We barely made it under the Coronado Bridge.
Back then, if it was your final WESTPAC before your EAOS, you'd throw your white hat over the side when passing under that bridge. If it floated, you got bad luck.
Mine was filled with bolts. Sunk right to the bottom!
I wonder if that's still a tradition.

There is a destroyer coming in now with its battle flag flying and the crew is manning the rails. Very cool.

Do the navy bands still play “California Here I Come” when the returning ships pull into San Diego?

Watched a carrier returning the SD once. Big ship making a tight turn.
Impressive.

Thanks!
Had a WWII Navy sailor turned merchant mariner uncle, based out of SD for decades. Bartended between runs. Wish I’d heard more of his stories.

I have a son who was in the Navy Air Force and flew off and on the USS Nimitz many times. Once with a landing problem on the plane, but he made it. Whew.
