There used to be a company called Publishers Central Bureau that sold closeouts of books and records.

I mentioned this to my mom the other day, and her eyes lit up. She estimates PCB sent her at least a thousand books over the years! I would enjoy getting a regular catalog featuring inexpensive books, will have to look around and see if there's anything like that now. Thanks for the idea!

PCB may be where she bought the Shakespeare records. I bought a 10-disc set and several individual records of plays from the series as well as well (don’t forget to download the MP3s of them from Youtube). I also bought records of Sherlock Holmes on the radio, Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds and other things. I think they were bought by Crown Books, which used to feature a lot of publisher over-runs. Nowadays the closest to what PCB did is Half Price Books. A lot of their inventory is used, but they also have those publisher overstocks.
