The Most Ambitious Effort Yet to Reform Policing May Be Happening In Ithaca, New York
Conde Nast ^ | 02.22.21 | BY WESLEY LOWERY

Posted on 02/22/2021 8:43:50 PM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

Mayor Svante Myrick will propose replacing the city’s current 63-officer, $12.5 million a year department with a “Department of Community Solutions and Public Safety” which would include armed “public safety workers” and unarmed “community solution workers,” all of whom will report to a civilian director of public safety instead of a police chief. Under the proposal, all current officers would have to re-apply for a position with the new department.

If the proposal is approved, calls for service will be evaluated to determine whether an armed or unarmed respondent is necessary, or another public agency altogether would be best to respond. Mental health calls would be outsourced to a standalone unit of social workers based on the CAHOOTS program pioneered in Eugene, Oregon. The goal, ultimately, is to have far fewer encounters between citizens and armed government agents.

He admitted he’s yet to decide whether he’ll use the term “abolish” when discussing the proposal: “This plan would abolish the police department while not abolishing policing,” he said.

When seconds count, social workers are days away.

We watch a lot of British police shows. It is amusing to see police arrive on scene unarmed and try to confront an knife-wielding perp with nothing but words or a stick picked up from the ground.
Ya gits what ya vote fer.

Ithaca is graying.

Getting rid of cops may be a way of convincing house-hogging seniors to move away.

He's 'African-American' as he calls himself. But I have to say when growing up whenever we went to upper NY state we were always told to stay clear of Ithica.

It’s always been a ‘bad’ place. As teenagers we were told to avoid going there when we crossed the state lines.

My brother lives in the area. Once you leave the City of Evil the finger lakes region is just like regular America. Even see horse driven buggies on the roads.

Well upper NY state is failing overall I think. Cuomo and other Governors see anything besides Lower NY as another state they don’t want to deal with.

The Finger Lakes region has a crime problem.

It’s not as quaint as it used to be.

I lived for a time in Elmira NY. It was a nice smaller city back then.....two years ago I drove thru there and couldn’t believe what a dump it had become!

Lots of shootings there the last few months. A few homicides, too.

Unfortunately, in my experience, the Finger Lakes is experiencing, at a micro level, the same thing as red states surrounding CA. The campus leftists have thoroughly ruined Ithaca and Tompkins County and are now spreading out into the neighboring counties and changing the political composition there.

By sister and husband use to drive there for shopping often.....they won’t even go there now as there’s just to much crime. Loads of drug activity from Philadelphia up there he said.
