Will Small Businesses Burn through Americans' Goodwill by Snitching on Their Customers?
American Thinker ^ | 22 Feb, 2021 | Kathleen Bustamante

Small businesses, including hair salons, have been hit hard in the Pacific Northwest over the past year thanks to stringent government restrictions. To make matters worse, leaders of blue states have become infamous for encouraging the public to snitch on these small businesses that are doing their best to stay afloat in a tanking economy. However, a recent encounter at an Oregon hair salon leads me to wonder if small businesses will begin snitching on customers next.

Two weeks ago, I visited a beauty school and hair salon in the Portland suburb of Hillsboro, Oregon. Little did I know I would be kicked out only minutes after I arrived because I voiced reservations about the intrusive three-page COVID-related questionnaire I was required to fill out prior to my appointment.

It was my first visit to the establishment, and when I stepped inside, a pink-haired receptionist with rhinestone-studded cheekbones took my temperature and handed me the questionnaire. I dutifully answered the 15 questions on page one pertaining to any physical symptoms I may be experiencing. Then I turned to page two, stopping abruptly when I read the first questions:

"Did you take part in a social gathering of more than 10 people in the last week in which you were within 6 feet of others?" followed by "If yes, was everyone wearing a mask/face covering, you included?"

SNIP

"I understand that. But tell me this: if I answer yes to either of these questions, can I still get my hair cut?"

She reiterated, "As a private business we have the right to ask these questions." She paused and followed up more boldly this time with "that is called capitalism."

Having traveled for two months through post-communist Eastern Europe in the mid-'90s, researching the various regimes, and having a number of friends

I expect businesses to start reporting to the government on all sorts of customer information to curry favor with the regime, the “god” of leftists.

If they ask questions they have no right to ask, then I will not feel obligated to answer truthfully.

Well the other great thing about capitalism is we have choices. I'd take my business elsewhere.

Exactly businesses who want my money better treat me well.

Other wise I go to others.

I’d walk out and never return when they tried to take my temperature, much less make me fill out a questionnaire of where I have been and who I have been with.

“I will not feel obligated to answer truthfully”

Exactly. Just lie to them.

...a beauty school and hair salon...

Were there more than 10 people on site? Maybe this person should have done a quick head count and demanded everyone on site to write their names and contact info on a piece of paper for me to report should I have to answer these questions at my next stop. If this is what passes for 'capitalism' to the pink haired freaks, then my simple proposal would be capitalism on steroids.

.........good article! I think the worm is turning. I went into a convenience store near me in Central Texas last night and not one patron or employee was wearing a mask including me. Also, no sign was posted on the front door requiring a mask. Last week there was such a sign.

My daughter works at a salon that has a questionnaire like that. It’s state mandated. My wife told them she couldn’t get her hair cut there as long as she has to fill out that questionnaire. Fortunately, she’s really good at trimming it and, frankly, I like it longer.

But when that girl in the article said, “This is capitalism.”, my response would have been, “so is this”, and turned and walked out.

My barber was required to keep a sign up sheet of customers in case someone tested positive. I always signed in with a bogus name and phone number. It was obviously bogus, like “Mickey Mouse” or something. They didn’t care. :)

Nobody (unless part of a "preferred" class) has a right to patronize a private business. If the author didn't like the rules the proprietor set, she should simply have gone elsewhere. The proprietor will soon learn more than she wants to know about capitalism.

It is communism because it is government pressured/”required”, etc.

Yes, when it IS government required. That’s why there was no hard feelings with our daughter.

And the local barber knows me personally, so it’s just a fun joke between us.

Sometimes the only way to fight an authoritarian regime is to not cooperate “exactly”. Just go through the motions.

Like my three layer mask with two layers cut out, which I rarely wear. It is fun to, when people are watching, drink coffee through it. It’s looking pretty ratty now. :)

We are entering an age of Nazi or Soviet style fear and paranoia - thanks to the heavy hand of government "regulation" being held over our heads as a club.

I happened to get a haircut yesterday. As I was talking to my barber I mentioned I was lucky to get an appointment - I made it Saturday evening for a Sunday afternoon cut with my favorite barber at the shop.

I asked him, innocently I wasn't going anywhere with it, "so, you don't take walk-ins? It's all still by appointment only?" His reply was chilling. He said "Oh no, we're not supposed to. You never know if it is someone from the government testing you, or the owner of another shop looking to report you..."

{string several heart-felt expletives in a row here} This is what we have come to in the land of the free and the home of the brave? How far we have fallen.
