Everyone wore masks during the 1918 flu pandemic. They were useless.

People called them “flu fences” and “chin sails.”........ During the influenza pandemic of 1918, officials often advised Americans to wear face masks in public. Doctors believed that masks could help prevent “spray infections,” according to historian John M. Barry in his book, “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History.” Enforced by local health officials, the facial coverings grew routine. Often, Red Cross chapters fashioned and distributed the masks that were “seen everywhere and would become a symbol of the epidemic,” Barry wrote. Americans used the masks as a method of retaining some normalcy during a pandemic that killed at least 675,000 Americans and 50 million people worldwide. If directed to wear a mask, homemade worked. “Take a piece of gauze the size of a sheet of typewriter paper,” said instructions in the Atlanta Constitution. “Fold it twice, so that it will fit an envelope. Then attach strings to the four corners and tie these strings at the back of the neck. The mask covers the nose and mouth, so that the wearer breathes through four thicknesses of gauze. A clean handkerchief is just as good as the gauze.” Now, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is debating whether it should recommend that people wear masks when they go outside. In 1918, with a different virus, it didn’t help. Iowa’s State Board of Health reminded those sewing masks to add some “colored worsted [a type of yarn] or tape” on the part of the mask that would be the outside. The upper margin was to be drawn tightly over the bridge of the nose, right under the eyes. Masks were to be washed after each use, and boiled for five minutes before wearing again.....

Why do hospital workers wear masks. Why do dentists wear masks? Why does my Family practice doctor wear a mask? Why do the EMP workers wear masks? Do you suppose they don’t want people to get sick?

Dominance and submission.

No more, no less.

Most of the world was brainwashed by fear porn in a depressingly short amount of time.

Pitiful.

Semi-retired Ophthalmic surgeon here.

Masks help stop bacteria you may be breathing out from getting into the patients wound.

Viruses are MUCH smaller.

Covid is about the size of an adenovirus.

“...surely THIS is the time a huge maskless gathering becomes a ‘superspreader’...”

I had the absolute PLEASURE of attending a hunting meeting and dinner last night. It was at a dive bar and the entire place was 100 feet by 30 feet, including the bar. ONE toilet for gals, one for the gents.

Not a mask in sight! We all ate ‘Family Style.’ The girls made an effort to wipe down tables - but we were eating RIBS - so that explains most of it. There were over 100 people in that space, most of us elbow to elbow, drinking and eating - it was like 2019 all over again!

I’ll let all FReepers know who, if any, comes down with anything...other than a hangover, because there were a LOT of people coming and going on their snowmobiles, too, all evening long. Tradition! :)

I have never seen any of these people more than 2x in my life, and have not been around ANY of them since Covid struck. Wisconsin has a 0.011 ‘mortality rate’ for Covid in a population of 5.822 MILLION.

It was probably the most memorable evening I’ve spent in a full year. Again - not a MASK in SIGHT!

Just curious, but does anyone recall masks being a big part of the story of the spanish flu outbreak before Covid? I’m not saying that masks weren’t actually used back then, I’m saying that I don’t recall anyone bringing up the idea that wearing masks was a big part of how Americans battled the disease before last year. If it was, it seems like a pretty strange 100 year omission.

Germs and bacteria are much much much much smaller than a virus.

"Those are N95 masks. Carefully and tightly fitted. Changed every 15-20 minutes."

You are just giving this idea that medical workers throw on the masks for a short period of time. I bet if I ask my sister, who has worked in a hospital for 30 years what the real story is, or her daughter, who is an operating room anesthesiologist, I would get the same story you are telling.

Put on the mask!

> Viruses are MUCH smaller. <

Thank you for the reply. Again I will play the devil’s advocate here. Yes, I have read that viruses are very small. But when viruses are exhaled by an infected person, wouldn’t they probably be stuck to droplets of moisture? And so couldn’t a good mask be at least somewhat effective against that droplet?

I was trained as a chemist. But I will freely admit that I didn’t pay too much attention to the diffusion lectures (the gal who sat next to me was quite pretty.)

As for me, I wear a cloth mask that my next-door neighbor made. She’s an old lady who loves to do crafts. As to that mask’s effectiveness, I have no idea.

The only measures of a mask’s effectiveness that have concerned me are the ability to breathe, to not drain my wallet whatsoever, and to make a wordless statement of scorn toward the whole Covuki theater thing. So I made mine out of a pleated leftover rectangle of patio screening material.

Masks do provide protection against transmission of bacteria, which is why they're worn during surgery.

They provide little protection against viruses, except by reducing aerosols from expectoration during a cough or sneeze.

Virus transmission is almost impossible to stop, especially respiratory viruses. There are documented cases of Hep C transmission (a blood borne virus) where surgery was performed in the same room hours after surgery on a Hep C patient. Atomized blood from the incisions or vacuuming the wound was blamed.

Think of how small an amount that was.

Unless you are wearing a N95 mask, your mask may not perfectly protect you from catching the virus. However, wearing a mask is practicing the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. So, answer this question: Would you want another’s careless actions cause you to land in the ICU fighting for your life?

Interestingly, HCQ, zinc, and Doxycycline was an early Covid therapeutic regime that got poo-pooed by government public health authorities. The Indians are seeing great results with Ivermectin, zinc, Doxycycline, and D3.

Under $2 in India:

Ziverdo Kit
https://www.rxindia.com/medicines/medicines-by-therapeutic-class/covid-19/ziverdo-kit/

Ziverdo Kit Contains Zinc Acetate 50 mg, Doxycycline 100 mg & Ivermectin 12 mg Dispersible Tablets. It is currently indicated in the first line treatment for COVID-19 positive patients.

Referring to a pre-official release of a randomised controlled trial using Ivermectin in three doses in primary contacts of COVID-19, It is said that 93 % of primary contacts who received Ivermectin did not develop any symptoms and 58 % of primary contacts who did not receive Ivermectin did progress to have symptoms of the pandemic.
“Quadruple Therapy includes Ivermectin 12 mg one dose, Doxycycline 100 mg once a day for four days, Zinc 50 mg once a day for four days and Vitamin D3 once a week. Ivermectin, Doxycycline and Zinc are to be repeated every 14 days and Vitamin D3 every week with blood levels monitored. The synergistic effect of these medicine acts to prevent viral multiplication and also stop the virus from entering human cells. Thomas Borody, an Australian gastroenterologist who is known for curing peptic ulcers with triple antibiotic therapy, has revealed that one block in South America that received Ivermectin combination prophylaxis did not contract coronavirus infection while others did,” he said.

Primarily to prevent bacterial infections, not viral infections. Orders of magnitude different sizes.

To which I’d add: If a business posts a sign saying “Mask required”, I won’t make a fuss. I’ll put on a mask. It’s not because I’m such a great believer in masks. It’s because I respect property rights. Maybe the property owner put up that sign because he’s surrendering to a governor’s order.

No matter. It’s his business. It’s his call.

Went to memorial service last June in Indy where there were almost no masks. Full mass, Communion, and meal.

Next day went to the grocery store and only the employees wore masks.

So wonderful to see people’s faces! Seeing stranger smile at you is something I didn’t realize I missed until I saw it.

I tried to order a few Ziverdo kits from India, but it was a lot of trouble, using wire transfers, etc. I gave up! Does anyone know of a source where you can use a credit card?

Technically Illegal to order in the USA. You’d be at risk of it being confiscated in customs.

More lefty propaganda. The 1918 Flu masks were as effective in reducing the spread of flu as disposable "surgical" or cloth masks are today in reducing the spread of CoVid-19, and that effectiveness is "somewhat but not a lot". A person using such masks protects other people from catching the disease, but not himself from them.

The ONLY masks which protect wearers from disease are thsoe rated N95 or better.
