Just read that 50% of the population gets a flu shot every year. I have some doubt.

Just one shot confers a significant degree of resistance to COVID-19 - more than the 50% threshold that Operation Warp Speed set for Emergency Use Authorization of a vaccine.
In addition to the growing and targeted vaccination, naturally acquired immunity due to exposure is probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the population already - although that will probably overlap with those who get vaccinated, to some unknown degree.
