Places like Walgreens, CVS will tell you what to do on their websites when the time comes.

Passing out numbers is essentially the same as passing out appointments.

The problem is demand outpacing supply which leads to rationing which is managed by an appointment system.

Please, I know you’re just trying to be helpful. I’ve researched all the options. I know what is required in my county. In fact, wife and I had appointments for last tuesday but weather forced us to cancel. We’ve been told two different stories. One, they will automatically call us back to reschedule. Two, no, they don’t do that, you have to reapply which we have done.
My county website isn’t making appointments. The only way one can get the vaccine is through the Huntsville Hospital Website. You cannot make an appointment there. You enter your data and they will call you back. There is one vaccination center. You must have an appointment. You cannot just show up. Right now, they’re trying to work off a backlog of weather related impacts.
BTW, there are other areas that do allow first come first served. There are reports of some showing up hours before the center opens, sitting in their cars in freezing weather, waiting to see if they arrived early enough. It makes more sense to set appointments to avoid this.

FWIW: “HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Huntsville Hospital says that because of a reduction in its vaccine allocation, it will stop scheduling new appointments until the week of March 22.”
