In my professional line of work I deal with traffic safety quite a bit. Despite that, I never understood the whole fixation our society has on sobriety limits for intoxicated driving. Groups like MADD pretend that reducing the blood-alcohol limit from 0.10% to 0.08% (or lower) will improve motor vehicle safety, but I’m sure the vast majority of major alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities involve drivers who are way above those numbers. Reducing the BAC limit from 0.10% to 0.08% does nothing when you’ve got knuckleheads out there driving above 0.20%-0.25% like this.
I agree. And the problem is that “mistakes” are forgiven. People get three or four DUIs before going to prison. How many people are dead and maimed by 3rd or fourth offendeders?
Same logic they use for gun magazine capacity.
Reducing the BAC means more casual drinkers will suddenly be above the limit, hence more $$$ for the arresting municipality.
I watched a movie where they took people from all walks of life, including a judge who had presided over many DUI cases and a man with multiple DUI convictions. They put them all through a driving test, gave them drinks until they blew a .1 then had them take the test again. It was pretty eye opening. Needless to say, the second test was a disaster. But guess who did the best the second time around? The habitual drunk driver. In his own bizarre way I guess practice makes perfect.
“Reducing the BAC limit from 0.10% to 0.08% does nothing...”
It’s not supposed to reduce drunk driving, it’s supposed to increase fine revenue.
