Several years ago my boss (who was an accomplished black man from Africa) was shocked to find that one of his new hires, an American black man, was the first member of his family in five generations to get a job. I'm not making this up. This African could not believe it.

There is a huge gulf between educated Africans and "Afro-Americans". Educated Africans have a work ethic and are not expecting free stuff. I think "sleep deprivation" for ghetto dwellers would be the least of their worries. The man my boss spoke of comes from five generations of sleepers and layabouts.

That is a real problem that used to be discussed openly and honestly; many black Americans (especially in cities) had no role models because they didn’t know anyone who worked - or was educated in any meaningful way.
