As the Texas power grid collapsed under a historic winter storm, Jose Del Rio of Haltom City, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, saw the electricity bill on a vacant two-bedroom home he is trying to sell slowly creep up over the past two weeks. Typically, the bill is around $125 to $150 a month, he said. But his account has already been charged about $630 this month — and he still owes another $2,600.
“If worse comes to worst, I have the ability to put it on a credit card or figure something out," Del Rio said. ”There is no one living in that house. All the lights are off. But I have the air at 60 because I don’t want the pipes to freeze.”
When he contacted Griddy, his electric company, they advised him to switch providers, Del Rio said.

“I have never heard of a variable rate power plan before. Seems like it’s a recipe for getting gouged.”
Not much different than a variable rate mortgage...which was what caused the 2008 meltdown.
Regardless of the dreams of the pointy headed libertarians, a large portion of Americans will ALWAYS fall for these types of schemes - where it costs very little now, but you put yourself at huge risk.
What the Republicans need to figure out is that if Republicans won’t regulate these types of schemes, the voters WILL elect others who will. But sadly, Republicans are still trying figure it out.
I believe this could happen many places in the country. You can buy your power from third party energy providers. It turns out that some of those have there prices determined in the commodities market. And the players never miss a chance to make a buck... Or more.
Kind of a cheap shot at Ted’s family by the NY Post - they aren’t public figures, they can go where they wish, when they wish.
Now Ted, he’s earned my IDIOT OF THE YEAR award for politicians. One would think that SOMEONE near him, perhaps his 10 year old daughter, could have told him how HORRIBLE it would look if he were caught going to Cancun while his entire state is freezing to death (in some cases). But either no one told him (because they were afraid), or Cruz just didn’t care.
Either way, he got just what he asked for.
Media is really going after Texas now. The Libs are on overtime.

I’ve talked to many liberals who are pushing nationalization of electricity as a solution to temporary problems like this.
Agree.
The left never lets a crisis go to waste.
(How many liberals is many? Just curious.)
More than a few dozen on Facebook and Quora.
I seem to attract them for comments.
😂👍🏼
Looks like a typo. Maybe just a mistake.
It can if you get into one of those energy company scams that promises you lower rates than the electric companies. You know, the ones who go door to door soliciting and asking to see your power bill to see how much money they can save you.
We’d get those folks too, but mr. mm checked into it and because of the engineering work he does, has some connections at the local power company.
He said that essentially, you cannot get power cheaper than from the power company itself and that the scams would catch up to you and burn you when the market changes.
I’ll bet he’s certainly not the only person who did that, but the media is not going to expose all the leftists who did it.
Always better to deal with the devil you know.
you can bet your posterior that gw bush’ lackeys are counting the proceeds. SCUMBAGS!
This whole story is full of bullcrap, which if burned as fuel, would solve much of the energy problems due to the blizzard.
Question: Why do so many people (implied) in the article, use electricity for heating when the state is floating on natural gas (cheaper and, in my opinion, better)?
Does Texas have nuclear reactors producing energy and if so, how much (percent of total energy produced in the state)? I don’t see any mention of this in leftist articles.
Where are emergency generators? Haven’t heard of anyone in these stories having one, even a small one for say, a tornado knocking down powerlines.
If you are a hospital, school building, major business structure, etc., you should automatically have emergency generators (oil operated or propane isn’t available or affordable) at the ready.
Also, emergency generators could supply energy for heating wrap-around materials used for decades to keep pipes from freezing. I used to sell “Wrap-On” pipe heating “belts”. Might even still have one in the basement.
No mention of this in the leftist press (because the aholes have no idea how energy systems work or even what a generator is).
The only thing the leftist media does with bullcrap paddies is put it in their pipes and smoke it. That is why those of us in the honest and knowledgeable media call them “shitheads”.

Nebraska’s is unique among the states in that ALL electric power utilities are “public power” districts. They are entities owned by the citizens, who also elect the commissioners. It’s been that way since the 1930’s—a form of “prairie socialism—which has worked out pretty darn well.
I just don’t understand this. How could Texas, of all places, have allowed it’s energy to go under the control of global warming bureaucrats???
Some important things to note:
1) The Texas legislature pushed for deregulation of the energy business and got it. If one was a good shopper, you could get excellent electric rates as long as you lived in an area that allowed for free markets, which not all of them did (see Austin).
2) Some energy companies charge a higher winter rate than summer rate. The premise was in response to frequent complaints of summer bills being too high due to air conditioning. Anyone on that sort of plan really got kicked this month.
3) Don’t trust the media. I see these type of stories and ask “how did the reporter find out about this person”? In most cases, they’re made up or exaggerated (see Janet Cooke).
4) Anyone with high energy bills from this cold wave won’t be seeing their spike until *next* month when the bill comes out. Also, many do not pay their electric bills on time knowing that power companies will not turn off electricity for non-payment during summer and winter months for fear of bad publicity.
I’m sure many will see drastic spikes in their energy bills due to the record cold snap but one has to understand how Texas energy works and how to avoid the pitfalls. One thing I know. Many power companies offered a more expensive rate which promised that your power was supplied by “green” energy such as wind and solar. No doubt those folks are going to get gouged but they did it to themselves by being suckers of all the eco-bs.
Hey Jose, TURN OFF THE WATER HEATER then turn off the water at the Meter with Your Customer Shut Off Valve (if you don’t have one then call the Water Utility and have them turn it off at the Curb Stop) or go to Home Depot and buy a Valve Wrench for $10.00.
After shutting off the Water at the Meter open the outside Hose Bib then go inside and open ALL THE FAUCETS IN THE HOUSE AND LEAVE THEM OPEN. THAT WILL DRAIN THE WATER LINES IN THE HOUSE. NOW TURN OFF THE HOUSE HEATER.
Personal Note: The ONLY way the Human Race has survived this long is due to massive procreation numbers, because there are WAY TOO MANY STUPID PEOPLE OUT THERE !!!
Ah the Uber peak pricing plan...
Re: Your #4
Try that with Duke Energy and see what happens.
