I heard a story once about some US servicemen using surplus fuel to burn out the pit under their latrines in order to “freshen them up”.We used that method in Vietnam - on a daily basis, the local sanitation engineers would pull the container (made by cutting a 55 gal. barrel in half) from under the latrine, pour a cup of diesel fuel on top and light it. There was often little clearance underneath the seat so you made sure your equipment was not hanging down when the barrel was pulled....the edges were ragged and sharp.

Interesting, recycling. I'm more familiar with their squat toilets. Bear won't sneak up on you with those but bring your own supplies.

Back in the day, my great uncle staggered to the outhouse, drunk as a skunk after getting his weekly pay and enjoying a few brewskis. He accidentally dropped his wallet in the hole. Got a saw, went in after it, and retrieved the wallet. My great-aunt made him sleep outside for a week. Thankfully, it was summertime.
