Texas energy nightmare

Posted on 02/17/2021 5:31:53 AM PST by uscga77

Nobody listens especially politicians until the lights (and heat!) go out. Texas voters will remember how our state officials 'managed' this energy crisis and set us up for failure with a foolish reliance on wind and solar that is not advanced enough to keep us warm. For some rolling blackouts are a big misnomer that have people freezing for many hours if not days. Pray and be good neighbors, especially to the elderly and those with little children.

It’s going to take weeks to recover from this.

People are running out of food and the grocery stores are closed.

Time to rethink green energy, isn’t it?

We’ve shut down 95 GW (95000 MW) of 24/7/365 baseload coal generation in the last 20 years. That’s about equal to shutting down the electricity in the entire www.misoenergy.org footprint!!

That’s what I’m talking about. Those you are referring to are talking about short term and short term issues aren’t addressing the basic problem; we sacrificed reliable baseload energy for unreliable green/gas energy over the last 20 years.

Read post 62. Those like me who have spent 40 years in 24/7/365 baseload generation aren’t surprised, we knew this day was coming because of stupid ignorant people making stupid ignorant decisions.

This is the Oroville dam spillway collapse on a grander scale. Governor Moonbeam's response was: S*&t happens..

Yes. But during a situation like in the midwest and TX it shows up as a domino effect, as the rolling outage/blackout situation we are seeing. The bottom like is we no longer have the 24/7/365 baseload capacity to carry the grid in the weather condition we are having.

It’s happened in TX before, 2011, and a polar vortex hit happened in 2019 too. Again it’s a consequence of ignorant people making ignorant decisions. The grid has to be sized for peaks. This last week shows it wasn’t.

It also shows progressive policies are actually regressive in real life.

If Texans want to find blame for this all they need to do is for some of them to look in the mirror and others to look to their neighbor.

Power to Choose in Texas led many to opt in for Green energy suppliers hungry to find outlets to use their heavily tax incentivized green power options. Enough Texans choose this folly to cause it to displace more traditional and reliable power supplies. 23% of the state’s power now comes from “renewable” energy sources that are not even available in these weather extremes.

In the next acts of this green new deal we will see massive failures of offshore wind farms. I’ve spent 40 years in the offshore oil business. It is a merciless environment in good places. I can’t imagine the disaster when a Noreaster or errant hurricane wipe out a New England offshore wind farm.

Already the cover-up by the greenies has begun. They blame the failure on greedy capitalists who are too cheap to “weatherize” the windmills and solar panels. In their propaganda this failure has nothing to do with the inherent unreliability of these energy sources. This is a reality that is being learned all around the world. You can’t build a modern society on hopium, pixie dust and belief in Unicorns.

Texans. Look in the mirror and across the street to find the cause of this disaster. The seeds of it are in your Power to Choose and some of you did not choose wisely. Now everybody is paying the price.

How much do you love subsidized green energy now?

There is no such thing as a natural gas storage tank that is material to electricity production. There are not even natural gas storage caverns or fields that are sufficient to that task and you don’t heat the ones that exist.

I know this, I’ve been in the business for more than 40 years.

Pick a subject you know something about to comment on.

Don’t worry, Gov Abbot has announced an “investigation “ with, I’m sure, “experts” on a “blue ribbon commission”

Idiot.

The professor at UT is a blow hard. He loves wind and will say nothing against it.

Even in the days when Texas relied on gas for electricity it was seldom that gas production fell enough to cause problems.

Wells these days are at lower pressure, they are older and depleted, that means less tendency to freeze from hydrate formation. Delivery rate may be a problem.

In the main, this is an exceptional condition spread over a wide area and probably one nobody wants to really pay the price to combat even if they could. Of course the sheeple will be whipped into a frenzy by propagandists like this UT professor and demand satisfaction or political heads and vast sums of money will be squandered with sound and fury signifying NOTHING.

Back that statement up with facts.

Here.

According to the story 16 gigawatts of renewable energy sources were offline while 30 gigawatts of thermal energy from coal, gas, and nuclear were offline. All due to the storm.

So the fault lies not with renewable energy but in not making the investment that would guarantee it works in all weather.

Finally, someone with a brain!

There are several separate issues mainly responsible for the lack of power in Texas this week.

1. Natural Gas Well freeze-offs; gas flow blockages resulting from water vapor freezing in the gas stream (reduced fuel supply at source)

2. Frozen components at some natural gas-fired power plants, forcing operators to shut down. (reduced generation)

3. The changeover from Natural Gas compressors to electric motor compressors, used to transport the gas over long distances. As power capacity is reduced, the NG fuel supply to power plants is starved (transporting the fuel supply).

Look these things up for yourself.

why do the wind mills in North Dakota work and the ones in Texas do not.

the ones in North Dakota work in the winter because they are designed to operate in the temperature ranges found during the North Dakota winters. Those in Texas were not designed to be subjected to such low temperatures for so long as experienced recently.

Consider the source.

ERCOT? Really? The same people who participated in all the events leading up to this disaster?

Nope. Sorry. You are going to have to do better than that to earn any credibility.

Already looked at the EIA data. Gas tried to fill the gaps but it was just too much. You can’t really expect too much of the system you have maligned and shoved to the back burner to bail you out of a jam created by your own folly.

Have a nice day.
