I was as outraged as any member of Congress. But senators take our own oaths. Our job wasn’t to find some way, any way, to inflict a punishment. The Senate’s first and foundational duty was to protect the Constitution.
Some brilliant scholars believe the Senate can try and convict former officers. Others don’t. The text is unclear, and I don’t begrudge my colleagues their own conclusions. But after intense study, I concluded that Article II, Section 4 limits impeachment and conviction to current officers.

Politics. Pure Politics, Mitch.
If this wasn’t a political mission to insure Trump stays out of future government office, then, why is it that ALL DEMOCRATS voted to take Trump out of future political efforts for government office?
Mitch is blinded by his own stake in this farce impeachment? No doubt, his wife had something to do with Mitch’s negative views and negative comments towards Trump. What did Elaine Chao do to stand out in the 4 years of Trump’s administration? She is part of the Washington swamp and was kept, basically, ‘hidden’ and quiet. His wife was just occupying a position in the cabinet, while also kept out of real policy-making. His wife is more important to Mitch than the real truth that this was a political hit-job, perpetrated by the deranged Pelosi and Schumer and Schiff and Nadler and most democrats. Mitch had to go along with his wife’s wishes or his home would be a hell-hole if he didn’t go along with his wife’s desires in the impeachment wishes.
Is McConnell trying to do some damage control after his outburst over the weekend?
Stuff your speech, Turtle. You should resign TODAY!! You deserve to be hung for treason.
I’m sorry Mr.Turtle is misinformed. The text of the Constitution is clear. A former president is not subject to impeachment or senate trial.
“””What did Elaine Chao do to stand out in the 4 years of Trump’s administration?”””
You are so correct. And to add to your comment I am having a senior moment and I cannot even remember which cabinet Chao was Secretary of.
About those judges.... Trump chose from a list. Who made the list? Those judges didn’t seem to have the least bit of loyalty to the guy who put them in the position in the first place. Maybe it is good that they don’t have loyalty to a President because of the need for an independent judiciary but they could have at least taken a look at election irregularities, if only to take them from baseless to unproven. As it was they left the President who nominated them to twist in the wind.
As for BcConnell, Trump could have taken him out in 2018 if he had wanted to. Sessions didn’t get back in to the Senate because Trump didn’t let him. Does BcConnell think he would have been different?
>>I concluded that Article II, Section 4 limits impeachment and conviction to current officers<<
so holding the trial did NOT protect the constitution...
Ditch’s national support mainly came from his strong support of Trump Judicial picks and minorly from his occasional support for Trump legislative initiatives as he did control the Senate.
Now that both of those reasons to support Ditch are in the trash heap of history, largely due to Ditch’s total lack of interest in examining vote fraud, he’s toast. Useless. Now, worse than useless.
Ditch has no support from the Base going forward. He should resign now.
McConnell is declaring that he’s not interested in the facts regarding the bogus “siege”.
McConnell-one of the enemies within.
Note that at no time has McConnell decried the obvious fraud in the “election” or even attempted to appear to investigate it - all of which he left to Trump. And then castigates for doing so.
Only a co-conspirator would have that kind of indifferent attitude. Any one with a shred of integrity would be outraged by the thought of the Presidency being stolen.
But he was notably passive throughout the entire post-Nov 3rd aftermath. As if he were waiting for the heat to blow over...
Make your own conclusions about “Leader” McConnell.
McConnel and the WPo they go together for sure.
McConnel is hurting the republicans he professes to lead.
Shut up McConnel !!!
It goes deeper than that. His wife's family's lucrative shipping business is totally dependent upon keeping China happy.
McConnell is the most subversive person in Congress
LIARS on both sides of the isle. No wonder Charles Manson has a higher favorability rating than Congress.
President Trump was at least irresponsible to continue to claim fraud and conspiracy after every state and federal entity said they could not see it.
He ran the gamut of all legal challenge and no entity agreed with him.
The fact there was a great deal of fraud, and the fact that elections procedures and rules were not followed, and both legally and illegally modified to facilitate fraud and universal suffrage, has no bearing on my above assertion.
I wish that McConnell would behave differently, but I do not treat him with the same contempt as others here. And those who are pro-Trump would do well not to cast out the McConnell portion of the GOP, which is not at all the same as the Romney wing.
Indeed, through the 2022 elections and beyond I predict that DJT will treat McConnell with far more deference and respect than he treats Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and others who voted for impeachment or to convict. DJT wants to win, and to do so he will need McConnell; he will need to give McConnell voice and influence; and in certain respects he will want to use McConnell to concede indirectly that he went too far in some of his post-election pursuits. He just did. Not even close to impeachable mistakes, but still ... he went too far.
DJT will criticize McConnell, and indeed McConnell deserves substantial pushing back from Trump and others. McConnell’s behavior has also fallen substantially short in various regards. But notwithstanding this awkward tension, the two will get past their differences and work together toward taking back the House and Senate in 2022 even as the GOP purges nearly all RINO candidates during the spring 2022 primaries.
An impeachment isn’t valid until it is delivered to the Senate; even then the Senate is not obligated to accept the impeachment for trial. Just as the House may or may not impeach, the Senate may or may not accept the impeachment for trial.
Man you are living in an alternate GOPe universe
