eigen is a German word meaning proper. It's not the name of a mathematician.

I suppose it was a German dude (Hilbert) that coined the terms eigenvalue and eigenvector. I’ve never liked the sound of them. The use of German words does not add anything to the understanding of concept. Maybe for a German speaker they do.
