What if Bill Gates disappeared?
We would be running UNIX based systems with graphic interfaces. Looking somewhat superficially like Windows but a lot more stable. BTW UNIX is not dead, still preferred for intensive calculations.

Depends when he disappeared. If it was around 1980 or just before, no PC-DOS/MS-DOS, my guess Gary Kildall's CPM would fill in the void and go from there. If Apple still developed the Macintosh, moat likely it would have captured mot of the market much easier, maybe. the IBM-PC, I can't say, maybe IBM would develop something on its own. If it was before he met Ed Roberts of the Altair Computer fame, no Microsoft BASIC but there could be a similar BASIC since Bill Gates used the then standard DEC BASIC to develop Microsoft BASIC. Anytime before that, who knows, there are a lot more butterflies that are let loose.

Anytime after say where MS-DOS along with Windows 95/98 became standard, he would most likely seen as a martyr depending on the circumstances of his disappearance
