An Atlantic depression left many parts of Germany with icy roads and weather warnings on Monday. Forecasters say this particularly cold winter period is almost over.
The Kachelmann weather service recorded this season’s lowest temperature in the village of Kühnhaide, on the German-Czech border, Sunday night.
The record low of –28.9 degrees Celsius (–20°F) is unofficial, as it was not picked up by the German Meteorological Service (DWD), whose network does not cover the village.
The Kachelmann weather service announced the temperature on Twitter, reporting: “The cold depression last night, again in the east with some –20s. In Marienberg–Kühnhaide in the Erz mountains, it was at least –29 degrees, the coldest night this winter.”
The DWD recorded its lowest temperature for the current winter season on February 10, when the temperature dropped to –26.7 degrees (–16.06°F) in Mühlhausen–Görmar in the eastern state of Thuringia. …

Yeah. it happens.
I remember some -26 days in my past.
Sure makes wind energy problematic, though, doesn’t it?
Here in Southern Connecticut, we are having a very typical winter for a change. Plenty of snow. Lots of cold. I’m liking it. This is the way winter should be in these parts.
I remember the ice storm in the early ‘70s, and the blizzard of ‘79, and an unending dump in the ‘90s. I now live in Phoenix, and do NOT miss any of it. My last northern winter was in Wisconsin where it touched -26F. ENOUGH!
-21 at my house yesterday morning. (Minnesota)
Rolling blackouts in Texas of all places....
Minus 24 this morning. South suburbs.
It’s colder because it’s warmer. Sounds legit.
“Minus 24 this morning. South suburbs.”
You win...I think.
I’m just thankful that the sun is out and the wind isn’t blowing.
Time to restart some of those shuttered power plants.
But it’s a dry cold.
Coldest I ever experienced was -25, twice. Once in Albany, NY, once in Kitchner, Ontario. The air was still in Albany, screaming like a banshee in Kitchner. Kitchner was far, far worse.
Remembering the mid-90’s 50 below wind chill. Had to walk 6 blocks for beer and smokes. Ran into a guy coming back from the same errand, we had a convo standing there like it was a nice summer day. Always dress heavy for the cold!

Currently 10 in East Texas with 7” of fresh pow. Rolling blackouts.
But I thought we were going through a global warming climate crisis!
Solar don’t work too well either with panels covered with snow.
And everybody is pushing that only electric cars can be sold. Can you imagine what a disaster that would be.
Yes, unfortunately I can.
