I did not see this movie until I was in university about some ten years later. And I remember someone I knew at the time shrugged and said that he thought the book far better than the movie.

That Jack Nicholson was one hell of a actor.
He's still alive and kicking from what I can gather.

I saw it as a child, bad idea.
Those twins gave me nightmares.
Jaws was worse though.

Others handled stress in different ways

Let me guess, in Jaws it was probably the scene with Ben Gardner’s boat probably freaked you out like it did with me when I was about 12 or 13, lol.

The book is much better than the movie. The movie really didn't convey what the "The Shining" was.

And it was much the same with Christine. Not a bad movie, but the book was far, far better.

I agree. Book (author notwithstanding) is much better than the movie.
Thing is, I would love to be able to be the caretaker of a resort like that for the winter. Being surrounded by 10 feet of snow for several months wouldn't bother me at all. I would never go crazy like Jack Torrance did. Never! Not me.

It was, but they usually are. The movie does not really follow the book that closely.

OMG, you and I must be the exact same age and that scene freaked me out for years. I got the JAWS soundtrack and dreaded listening to that portion of the track, cuz it still scared the crap out of me! In the theaters, as you well know, popcorn went flying everywhere!

I know it’s “critically acclaimed” and all, but I never much cared for this movie. Didn’t find it that scary (not original Halloween scary anyway) and otherwise uninteresting.
The shots of the lodge and the snow were good.
I’d sooner turn on Used Cars than this.

The book was much, much better.
