Lincoln did not attack "the South" at all until after Jefferson Davis attacked US troops in Fort Sumter, forcing them to surrender, and after the Confederacy formally declared war against the United States (May 6, 1861).
Even then, during the civil war's first year, more battles were fought in Union states & territories than in the Confederacy, and more Confederate soldiers died in the Union that year than in the Confederacy.
It began as a War of Southern Aggression against the United States.

And yet again, that's just pure Democrat psychological projection.
Unlike President Trump, President Lincoln was legally able to replace virtually the entire Washington, DC, bureaucracy with loyal Republicans -- or at least men he hoped would be loyal, not all proved to be.
It's a reason ousted Democrat bureaucrats were so eager to find a new government (in Montgomery or Richmond) they could latch onto.
After the Civil War they changed the laws to prevent future presidents (like Donald Trump) from increasing unemployment among Democrat bureaucrats.
