Block Ice. I had forgotten that existed. We had an icebox before we got the refrigerator. A block of ice inside an insulated box with door and shelves for the milk etc.

IIRC block lasted about 4 days depending on how often you opened the door. The block went on the top shelf.

As I remember, that is what the distributors were set up for. They had the big ice coolers full of bagged ice at WalMart - hundreds of bags, refilled regularly.
