Charisma Carpenter on Wednesday posted a lengthy message on social media in which she accused Joss Whedon of "hostile and toxic" behavior on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel.
"For nearly two decades, I have held my tongue and even made excuses for certain events that traumatize me to this day," she began.
"Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working together on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel," she wrote of the show creator. "The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a beating, heavy heart that I say I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively."
Whedon had no comment as of press time.
Carpenter claimed Whedon found his alleged misconduct "amusing," claiming he was particularly cruel to her while she was pregnant, even calling her "fat" in front of cast and crew.
"He was mean and biting, disparaging about others openly, and often played favorites," she wrote. When Whedon found out she was pregnant, she says, he asked the actress if she was "going to keep it" and "manipulatively weaponized my womanhood and faith against me," Carpenter alleged.
Speaking about her pregnancy and stress, Carpenter wrote that all her joy was "sucked right out," adding, “I made excuses for his behavior and repressed my own pain.”

And another washed up actress yapping years later.
“Help my career...”
I would not have a hard time believing it. He seems to be a leftist prick.
While I really like SMG (because I don't hear from her or her actor hubby), there is still only one Buffy for me.
It has been known for years how he treated them. I could have sworn I had read what he did to her a long while ago. But, it may have been via a third party. Always liked her.
He’s infamous for both his leftism and his prickishness. It’s unfortunate because I think a lot of his stuff is (or was) entertaining.
I’m not sure that even constitutes “abuse”
Mean. Yes.
But I’ve had far worse bosses say far worse things and I’m a guy.
Considering some of the things this human waste has said — including making fun of the way cancer survivors look (https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/apr/27/joss-whedon-tweet-demeans-cancer-survivors-hit-rep/) — I’m pretty good with someone going after him. Shoot, throw in lefty-on-lefty iViolence and I’m actually kinda liking it. :)
Another one whose ten minuets of fame is over and is now looking for attention. Screw these people coming out twenty years later.
Let’s just call it right now. All male bosses are evil (unless they identify as female, or have brown skin. Extra protection points for both and some sort of disability)
I believe her. I’m a huge Buffy fan and I have heard stories like this one before, about Joss Whedon. Even James Marsters (Spike) had bad experiences with the guy.
I wonder if SMG will say anything.
Congratulations to Charisma for speaking out.
What I find disturbing is his completely inappropriate comments about her pregnancy. Is she going to keep it? That’s a lawsuit right there.
And calling her fat, while she was pregnant, is beyond the pale in Hollywood.
Men who have no abstract moral compass will simply behave according to reward and punishment. Whedon obviously got rewarded for being the person he is and once he amassed power, was beyond the reach of punishment.
The great conservative Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” People know these hollywood schmucks are schmucks, but the apparatchiks like the money and they want to share in the power, so they do nothing.
Me too. She auditioned for the role of Buffy but he went with the blonde. Makes sense, though; considering the Hollywood stereotype of a young blonde woman in distress; this time, she can fight back.
Carpenter’s claims come seven months after Ray Fisher accused Whedon of abusive behavior on the set of Justice League reshoots, which the filmmaker oversaw following the exit of original director Zack Snyder.
Fisher’s complaints saw WarnerMedia launch an investigation into the Justice League reshoots, and Carpenter said she was part of the investigation.
Joss is a man’s name?
Most of what people complain about is just “life.”. I worked for an Israeli company. Even when my coworkers were not trying to be rude, they were rude. It’s just their culture. You want the job? Put up with the $hit. Otherwise, quit.
I wouldn’t jump to conclusions.
I have no idea why she spoke out at this time.
“nother leftist “feminist” man accused of abusing women.”
Except she’s openly religious and he’s a woman-hating queer.
Exactly. He said mean things. Okay. Every boss I ever worked for said mean things from time to time. Don’t like it? Quit.
There’s a point at which litigating every stupid comment creates a hostile work environment where everyone has to walk on eggshells all the time. If the barrier for what is acceptable becomes “could anyone, anywhere, ever possibly take any offense or be upset by this in any way now or ever in the future?”, then we can kiss language goodbye. We cannot communicate effectively under those conditions.
A gay man’s name, yes.
