Blockchain-based startup Presearch.io has released a decentralized search engine to help provide a more private alternative to Google. Taking a play out of privacy-centric web browser Brave’s book, it also rewards its users with it native crypto token, PRE.
The Ethereum-based project uses searches powered by independent nodes to help protect the identity of the people who make queries for data. Moreover, it puts a dent in the monopolistic power of Google to organize and rank results.
The project’s origin story begins in 2011, when Colin Pape’s ShopCity.com had its content buried by Google’s algorithm. The company filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission that the results were due to Google’s algorithm preferring its own, competing products over ShopCity’s.
Ultimately, Pape decided there was a need for an independent search engine, so he started building Presearch.
What would really work for me is to be able to add Presearch to Brave.
To my friends: Your turn.
Thanks! I gave it a spin with a search for some independent tutorials. Familyop approved. Go for it!
Yeah, it’s good. I’m replying because I want to bump the thread.
Overall though, Google is King of technical searches. Still, if I can avoid them to any extent, I’m all for this.
I’ve been DDGing for 3-1/2 years now, but will look into this.

So far no better in my test search: “trump patriots win”
The site where most Trump fans now reside is “patriots.win”, and it should come up with my above search.
So far, no joy. But when it does, I’ll switch.
So does this search engine only install on google’s Chrome browser?
I’ve been using duck duck go for several years already. Not sure why I should switch since they don’t collect or save my searches and screw google that way.
Help me understand why I should switch?
Blockchain.
Great link to add to the KB. Thank you.
All over this.
presearch.org is already an option in Brave. Click on settings (from the menu icon on the upper right side of the browser, then click settings), choose ‘search engines’ then in the extended list you will see presearch. Right click, then click to make it your default.
Thank you
In Brave, what do you put in for:
URL with %s in place of query: ______________________
Thanks!
Go to Settings -> Search Engines. If you use Presearch.org once, you’ll find it in the ‘Other’ section. There is a ‘...’ menu next to that search engine that will allow you to indicate that you want it to be the default.
I just set it up in Brave. Super easy.
But, it should be a matter of clicking on the Presearch.org entry in the extended list of search engines, and setting it as the default search engine.
