Here’s an excerpt from the black linguist John McWhorter’s new essay, part of his serialized new book:
One can divide antiracism into three waves. First Wave Antiracism battled slavery and segregation. Second Wave Antiracism, in the 1970s and 1980s, battled racist attitudes and taught America that being racist was a flaw. Third Wave Antiracism, becoming mainstream in the 2010s, teaches that racism is baked into the structure of society, so whites’ “complicity” in living within it constitutes racism itself, while for black people, grappling with the racism surrounding them is the totality of experience and must condition exquisite sensitivity toward them, including a suspension of standards of achievement and conduct.
Third Wave Antiracist tenets, stated clearly and placed in simple oppositions, translate into nothing whatsoever:
When black people say you have insulted them, apologize with profound sincerity and guilt. But don’t put black people in a position where you expect them to forgive you. They have dealt with too much to be expected to.
Black people are a conglomeration of disparate individuals. “Black culture” is code for “pathological, primitive ghetto people.” But don’t expect black people to assimilate to “white” social norms because black people have a culture of their own.
Silence about racism is violence. But elevate the voices of the oppressed over your own.
You must strive eternally to understand the experiences of black people. But you can never understand what it is to be black, and if you think you do you’re a racist.
Show interest in multiculturalism. But do not culturally appropriate. What is not your culture is not for you, and you may not try it or do it. But—if you aren’t nevertheless interested in it, you are a racist.
Support black people in creating their own spaces and stay out of them. But seek to have black friends. If you don’t have any, you’re a racist. And if you claim any, they’d better be good friends—in their private spaces, you aren’t allowed in.

The fact is, a good citizen black person con walk in any white neighborhood in complete safety. There are huge areas of the nation where a good citizen white person cannot walk without a near-certain risk of assault, robbery and murder.
Until that fact is dealt with straight on, there is no point in “discussions”.
This is the illogical assumption of the Left.
It is not true.
The country was *not* built at the expense of people of color.
People of color have historically been treated much better in the United States than elsewhere.
The slaves of color in the United States were treated better than other countries.
Black people in the United States are treated better than people of color in the entire world.
Slavery in the USA probably slowed US development. Virtually all the capital created with slavery was destroyed in the Civil War.
This was because most of the Capital in the South was in the value of the slaves. That value was reduced to zero when the slaves were freed.
Slaves always had a difficult time creating a significant return on investment, because, in the USA, they were not just worked to death, as they were in much of the rest of the world, such as in the Muslim world or in Brazil.
Thomas Sowell distinguishes between racism and discrimination. Racism, he said, is in the mind. Discrimination is a behavior. He further claimed that, since 1964, there has been no effective anti-black discrimination and racism doesn't matter because it exists in people's minds.
OTOH, events like this don't help to reduce either racism or discrimination:
When the rate at which blacks and other minority groups commit crimes drops to the range typical of whites, I’ll be willing to listen to their grievances. Till then I’ve no interest in self serving complaints, excuses, or useless blather.
I live in Illinois. Politicians here are working on legislation to change teaching standards. They call this “Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards”.
Teachers will be expected to “mitigate their behavior with respect to racism, sexism, homophobia, unearned privilege, Eurocentrism, etc”. They real problem with Blacks is broken homes. But that is too hard to address. You will never see LeBron or Oprah take on this issue. It is much easier to blame Whites, in this case, White teachers, for Black failure.
Why would the marxist left want to solve a problem they themselves intentionally created?
The only systemic racism in the United States is “Affirmative Action” and it’s forced by law on its victims of all races.
It’s so easy to convince people that they’re a victim. Life is hard and it is a short cut excuse as to why you don’t succeed. It’s not YOUR fault ya know! It’s the ‘system’.
The whole ‘white privilege’ is just a crutch, an excuse to say “my problems are all because I’m not white and YOU are the problem, submit to me!”.
I was born and raised in the UK -which means we’ve been invaded by the Romans, Normans, Saxons, French, etc. - SURELY this means that I’m a victim and SOMEBODY owes me for some past transgression. Oh yes, that was a long time ago and I didn’t suffer directly because of it. Maybe I should get on with living and not letting excuses get in the way of achieving something.

Professor McWhorter is liberal but in the mold of a Glenn Greenwald - fair and honest. That is why he has written for both The Atlantic and the City Journal. I have also really enjoyed his books on the history of the English language. Thank you for posting his essay.
