Driver Survives 70-foot Plunge Off Wisconsin Interchange

MILWAUKEE—A driver survived when his pickup truck plunged about 70 feet off a slippery interchange exit ramp in Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin Department of Transportation camera captured the Milwaukee-area crash. The video shows the pickup hitting snow on the right shoulder before flipping over the barrier wall and plummeting to Interstate 94 below as cars pass by.

When deputies arrived, they found the pickup upright in the right shoulder of the westbound I-94 lanes, the sheriff’s office said. Two people were already trying to help the driver, who was conscious and breathing.

The man was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, sheriff’s officials said.

A highway official said crews work as quickly as possible to eliminate snow from shoulders in order to avoid crashes.

“The biggest risk with that is the melting and the freezing creates sort of a ramp, a natural ramp,” Milwaukee County’s Director of Highways and Maintenance Eddie Santiago told WISN-TV.

Santiago said that after plowing, snowplows shift to snow removal from bridges and overpasses because of the potential danger.

Maybe it’s the angle, but it doesn’t look like there is much of a guard rail on the driver’s right hand side.

It said he survived, it failed to mention he’s four inches shorter

They have the same types of high curvy bridges in Fargo.

What gets me is that there is a ton of land. There is no reason to build those high bridges like that. Especially in locaations that don’t have all that traffic.

I swear to this: The day my car goes over a bridge, is the day I stop driving.

I saw a post about this on Jalopnik earlier today. One of the commenters mentioned there that when bridges get plowed, the snow accumulates along the guardrails and basically assumes the shape of a ramp. And of course it can freeze overnight. That might have contributed here.

:D Don't be too sure! Two of my ancestors did that, one in the 1920's, the other in the 1940's. Both survived.

There's a good chance you'll stop breathing too.

Well, there ya go. Just goes to show how useless guard rails are. This should save tons of taxpayer dollars.

Not as much land if you want to place your connecting interchanges in cities like Milwaukee that were largely built before the modern highway system.

We don't have that problem here in Phoenix.

I wish that didn't happen.

What if he had his full-fat yogurt, berries and fried eggs for breakfast that morning (along with Vitamin D3)?

I think things would have ended differently.

Likely he had Cocoa Puffs and Pop Tarts for breakfast.

I hope he is okay. He was going somewhere. Pick up his wife, work, emergency. Any manner of things. Prayers up.

They're the same thing we have around here in NM. It's high enough to prevent semis from going over. The design forces the front wheels back into the lane and away from the barrier. The problem here is that there was snow piled up inside the barrier that negated the safety aspects of the barrier. The driver drove up the snow and over the barrier.
