There was a lot of history made at the Super Bowl last night for Tom Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and halftime show headliner The Weeknd, but Nielsen today are making some history of their own.
As America waits and waits on the viewership verdict, it appears at this late hour that there will be no ratings for the Big Game any time soon for the first time ever.
Literally becoming the new definition of the phrase “You had one job,” the long-time data measurement company has nothing to report on the Buccaneers 31-9 win over former reigning NFL champs the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS yesterday. Fast affiliate ratings may be available early in the AM tomorrow, I hear. However, as a well-positioned network source said, “that’s anyone’s guess at this point, isn’t it?”
The problem seems to be incorrect metrics that have caused Nielsen to “re-process” their data. A spread sheet of ratings information did go out earlier Monday, but was quickly recalled. Throughout the day, networks were told that numbers would be coming soon, only to be told that the release time had been pushed back again.
“It looks pretty certain there will be nothing tonight now,” said another network exec to Deadline on the delay. Usually unadjusted early numbers for overnight ratings are distributed to network clients around 8 AM PST. Around that time today, Nielsen made it known that nothing was coming down the pipe until at least 11:30 AM PST.
On that and the overall unprecedented delay on the big draw on TV, Nielsen did not respond to requests from Deadline on the matter. We will update if we hear from them, or when the Super Bowl ratings come in – whatever is first.

I used the time to go to Costco. I got parking up front, ordered some new sun glasses, since nobody was at the optical counter and checked out immediately with my other purchases, since there was no one ahead of me to check out. So apparently a lot of people were doing something other than going to Costco on a Sunday afternoon.
Results are being tabulated by Dominion.
Expect a huge dump of ratings in a single spike sometime in the future.
“Rating? What Ratings? We don’t need no stinkin Ratings?”
What few network shows I watch, I always DVR and watch later, so I can skip over commercials.
Did not watch...
Just in case you think that comment is pure sarcasm. :)
Guess Who They're Mad About Now! 😂 Mark Dice video 5:31
Us either and didnt miss it. NFL is dead to me
The advertisers have already shifted online. Professional sports was the last live broadcasts the networks could offer that people might watch but even that can't offset their losses.
Unknown at the time, but another Freeper and I both happened to be watching Master & Commander at the same time.
Too quote a Civil War Yankee gun runner to the Confederates: “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Bet you it was lower than that. I’d like to know how many bailed at the Black National Anthem. Then at the Springsteen Ad, etc.
I don’t think it’s the wokeness as much as the total national disinterest in Tom Brady.
A delay in the rating count? Maybe they are stuffing the numbers with mail in ratings?
exactly
Only watched a very short time, but was also intrigued by the amount of self promotion ads like for the Paramount streaming service and other network shows. Must have been really hard to sell ads. Wife wanted to see the commercials and halftime show, very disappointing. Switched to streaming old tv shows.
Like others I didn’t even know who was playing. It will be interesting to see the impact on the whole football industry as their ability to generate income is finally acknowledged. Low demand for tickets when things open up will have an effect.
Did you hear? They’re accusing Brady of being racist because he’s won 7 super bowl rings during black history month, on Twitter. It was in Citizen Free Press.
They’re going to estimate the number of folks who wanted to watch but couldn’t because of Covid and Trump and the Q cult.
It was unwatchable. All the woke crap before and leading up to it, and the commercials as well were left leaning garbage mostly as well... and then a pretty boring game...
They are waiting for the absentee fans to weigh in.
