Tortoises and turtles are harmless things.

Have you ever met a Snapping Turtle? They are very aggressive predators.

Not saying that they deserve an unprovoked attack for being a predator but a snapping turtle can easily take a finger or two if you get too close.

I had a female Snapper who came through my yard every spring to lay her eggs in the wetland on the other side of the ridge.

Sometimes she miscalculated and didn’t make it under the gate to up through the pasture and would get “stuck” bumping against the fence.

I picked her up and carried her to the gate so she could go on her way.

Last year, some nasty bastard nearly hit the concrete wall of the neighbor’s house as she tried to cross the road, just so he could kill her.

She’d been here as long as I have, 31 years, and never once acted the least bit unpleasant.

The sight of her, on her back, crushed and ruined on the side of the road, broke my heart.

She was part of our little hamlet and everyone mourned her death.

Then don’t get close to them. They’re defending themselves.
