Sen. Joe Manchin Says No To $15 Minimum Wage, Possibly Killing Push In Congress ($11 may be okay)
Huffington Post ^ | 2/02/20 | Tara Golshan, Dave Jamieson

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said he does not support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, throwing a major wrench in Democrats’ already fraught hopes of giving workers a major pay raise.

Manchin, who is among the most moderate of the Senate Democratic Caucus, did, however, open the door to a more narrow increase in the minimum wage from its current $7.25.

“I’m supportive of an increase that’s responsible and reasonable, and in my state that’s $11,” Manchin told congressional reporters, adding that the rate should account for inflation.

Manchin is bucking his own party’s leadership. House Democrats have already passed the Raise the Wage Act, which would phase in a $15 minimum wage over several years. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) is behind the proposal — as is President Joe Biden.

“No one in America should work 40 hours a week making below the poverty line — $15 gets people above the poverty line,” Biden said in late January. The White House’s proposal for COVID-19 relief backs a $15 minimum wage, and Biden issued an executive order last week that took the first step toward increasing the minimum wage for federal workers and contractors to $15 an hour.

**SNIP**

Manchin’s balk at $15 shows just how much of an uphill climb Democrats face on their minimum wage plan. Although $15 is now formally a piece of the party platform, several Democratic senators still have not endorsed the number. So far, only 37 have co-sponsored the minimum wage bill reintroduced in the Senate last week, while a handful facing reelection in 2022 have kept their names off the legislation.

Between 2007 and 2014, IT contractors have filed almost 15,000 petitions (certified LCAs) for H1B visas for work placed in Bentonville, Arkansas, home to Walmart’s headquarters and information technology center. Walmart is a known client of these controversial outsourcing contractors, including Infosys, Cognizant and Wipro.” - https://aflcio.org/sites/default/files/2017-03/Walmart%2Band%2BTech%2BIndustry_4115Final.pdf

Walmart: made in Communist China, pisses on the American worker by firing Americans and replacing them with H1B Indian scumbags

Exactly. What the Hell is stopping states from raising their own minimum wage? This is such a ridiculous knee-jerk liberal issue.

Osmania University, India
University Of Madras, India
Acharya Nagarjuna University, India

“Survival of this nation requires a stable middle class, which requires we not let it be gutted with wage suppression in the name of “free trade.”

I agree. But let me explain how greed helped destroy the auto industry in Michigan. (I know the word destroy is an exageration) however.....

During the middle of the last century America began to see a surge in auto production. New plants were built and new hires were added to produce the new demands.

Along came such options as the popular muscle cars and demand futher increased. Gas cost remained relatively cheap.

Manual labor was demanded. In all fields of skilled as well as unskilled labor. Robotics were yet a thing of the future.

Along with surging employment and the American dream, came new demands from the union ranks. Rather than face shutdowns, management caved to demands. And why not, times were good right? The middle class began to flourish.

Then came Carter....high energy costs, high inflation, high interest rates, and surging unemployment numbers.

This not only affected heartland America but as well the manufacturing center. Production jobs were now getting layoff slips and futures were uncertain. The automobile manufacturing base began to crumble because many of the manufacturing base were the consumers of the new auto purchases.

Since then we’ve seen the ups and downs of market demands. But one thing remained unchanged. Unfunded liabilities to fund the previous demands of the union entitlements and liabilities.

Fast forward to 2008 and the housing market. That bubble was about to burst and when it did it created a vacume. We were now in a manufactured recession.

Government (well, taxpayers) bailed out the banks and to a large degree the auto manufacturers.

But what affected the auto industry ( besides government overeach) is the demands of entitlements agreed to decades prior. When times were good they were booming. However, the iou’s were not funded for the rainy days. These are the unfunded liabilities which crippled the auto industry and handed control and oversight to government control.

Unfunded liabilities coupled with government regulations will be the downfall of America and will create a dominoe effect in several sectors of the economy.

We will collapse from within.

I just posted a kgb defectors prophetic predictions which dovetail this. Its in the religion section.

And not listed is an nearly equally as large 14,000 Indians H1Bs hired for Walmart’s Sunnyvale, CA operations.

It’s the 20th largest H1B Indian visa sponsor in the US in 2020, and that doesn’t include all the workers sourced from all the Indian placement firms (Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro and others)

I agree - but fail to see how it's relevant to preventing wage suppression by foreign labor.

“There would be no stopping the communists on anything since the filibuster would already be gone. They could get the most radical lunatic ideas passed on 51 votes.”

Don’t rule that out. They have a simple majority in the Senate and my understanding is that it only takes a simple majority to nuc the filibuster. I suspect they are just bidding their time till they light that fuse.

To: alternatives?

74% of new American STEM college graduates (multiple sources) can not find work in their own field, due to the Cheap Indian Labor Express, H1B, OPT and a plethora of other foreigner visas. Most universities have whole departments whose job it is to place foreign graduates. Many get federal money for doing so. A service American graduates are not entitled to.

It’s not only high school graduates not worth $15/ hr....

Another thing to keep in mind....

Increasing the minimum wage is unsustainable especially in these ecomically opressed times.

Raising the minimum wage will only cause more mom and pop shops to close for lack of ability to compete against the corporatly owned big box stores.

Corporations have the capital and fortitude to replace non essential service and production workers with automation.

Just look at amazon. As they gain more and more of the retail industry, expect those currently employed to be replaced by technology. And the quicker the increase in federally mandated wages, the quicker timeframe for their replacement with automation.

Lets not further cripple the mom and pops ability to survive.

In a large part American manufacturing became crippled by these policies and because they were placed at a disadvantage, American manufacturing had to choose alternatives to the high cost of production here in the states.

Since labor costs were a large part of those increases. Corporations were forced to either pack up and relocate to another country, or out source to smaller production facilities here in the U. S. Which often employed illegals.

American manufacturing had to choose alternatives to the high cost of production here in the states.

Which is why we need very high protective tariffs - like the rest of the industrialized world. The only thing worse that union labor are products made with 3rd world labor imported back to the USA duty free. The is the road to socialism and here we are...

The minimum wage is at best a Tenth Amendment argument. In actuality the market should decide and there should be no minimum =

the road to serfdom and socialism....

The Democrats will never raise the minimum wage to $15. Why?

A couple both making that would be thrown off of any govt/ assistance and that would ruin the Cloward/Piven strategy...
