Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said he does not support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, throwing a major wrench in Democrats’ already fraught hopes of giving workers a major pay raise.
Manchin, who is among the most moderate of the Senate Democratic Caucus, did, however, open the door to a more narrow increase in the minimum wage from its current $7.25.
“I’m supportive of an increase that’s responsible and reasonable, and in my state that’s $11,” Manchin told congressional reporters, adding that the rate should account for inflation.
Manchin is bucking his own party’s leadership. House Democrats have already passed the Raise the Wage Act, which would phase in a $15 minimum wage over several years. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) is behind the proposal — as is President Joe Biden.
“No one in America should work 40 hours a week making below the poverty line — $15 gets people above the poverty line,” Biden said in late January. The White House’s proposal for COVID-19 relief backs a $15 minimum wage, and Biden issued an executive order last week that took the first step toward increasing the minimum wage for federal workers and contractors to $15 an hour.

Manchin’s balk at $15 shows just how much of an uphill climb Democrats face on their minimum wage plan. Although $15 is now formally a piece of the party platform, several Democratic senators still have not endorsed the number. So far, only 37 have co-sponsored the minimum wage bill reintroduced in the Senate last week, while a handful facing reelection in 2022 have kept their names off the legislation.

“sound statistical analysis”
And, I should have added, proper experiment design - which looking at a graph is also not.
It is not just the McDonalds hamburger that goes up it is EVERYTHING in your grocery store, it is EVERYTHING that you buy, this hike in minimum wage DOES NOT help workers when they end up paying far more for everything they buy!! The increase in minimum wage DOES help tax revenue and worker compensation revenue unemployment revenue so the ONLY entities gaining ANYTHING is government!!!
Who it REALLY doesn’t help is the workers driven into unemployment by the minimum wage increase.
Labor costs are much higher than just a pay check increase:
All entitlement costs must also be factored in. Add healthcare costs, sick pay, unemployment insurance, vacation allowance, 401K contributions and other retirement perks, etc

Knowing the dollar figure that your company spends on labor only tells you part of the story. Granted, it’s a useful part of the story, especially if you’re trying to make sure there’s enough money in the bank to cover your paychecks and payroll taxes. However, your labor cost percentage is a better indicator of the overall health of your business model because it shows the relationship between your labor costs and your overall sales revenue.
How to Calculate Labor Cost Percentage
To calculate labor cost percentage, divide your labor cost for a period by your gross sales for the same period. Labor cost percentage doesn’t just include payroll, but also any employee benefits and taxes associated with your payroll. If your labor costs for the first quarter come to $33,000 and your gross sales for that quarter were $100,000, your labor cost percentage is 33 percent. If you spent $50,000 on the payroll during the second quarter and sold $200,000 worth of goods during that quarter, your labor cost is 25 percent.

And really that is the bottom line.
Big box stores like Walmart also started off-shoring to India and bringing in Indian labor to replace Americans in traditionally white-collar jobs.
It’s the number 20 user of direct H1B visas last year, and that doesn’t even add in the tens of thousands of Americans replaced by Indian outsourcing firms.
So automation killing the blue-collar workforce and Indian outsourcing is killing the white collar workforce.
All while Freepers make Walmart out to be such a great American company.
I don’t know what that situation is.......all I’m saying is right now, at present time, Walmart’s Home Office is still ran by American born people with English as their first language.
What tomorrow brings? I don’t know. But 10,000 H1B apps seems very high. The Home Office, as of a few years ago had just under that many people employed in Bentonville.
Here is what I don’t know.......can a company sponsor H1Bs without committing to hire them?
Do companies sponsor well over their need or desire because many apps will not make it in?
As far as Walmart’s purchasing of Chinese goods........Walmart also sells American and Canadian goods too.
I don’t like the fact the so much Chinese garbage is being sold in an American retailer.......but, on the other hand, Americans are buying it!
But on the other hand (because I have 3 hands right now) Walmart makes Americans money.
Stock holders, employees, vendors, right down to the local farm providing milk.
It’s a mixed bag. Calling someone a traitor because they participate in capitalism really falls flat.
So take your Pro-Union propaganda elsewhere. Everyone hates Walmart but everyone likes to eat and buy T.V.s, which zero are made in the U.S.A. anymore.
Are GameStop traders anti-American? Those games and even the game systems are NOT made in America. Perhaps you need to see what you own not made in America and toss it out. Your house might be pretty empty afterwards.
You are clearly a Union plant from the DU.........
Pretty snarky remarks for a new person.
I need more information. 15,000 petitions is a very high number.
There are less than 10,000 currently employed in or around Home Office.
There are no neighborhoods in Bentonville which have people from India residing there. A trend that happens when large ethnic groups begin arriving at a new location.
No one I know within Home Office or even on the store level has ever seen or spoken to someone from India.......with a claim of 15,000 applicants if they all got in people would notice.
The site you provided is the AFLCIO Union website.
Unions tend to lie.......not sure if you’re aware of that.
Believing numbers from the AFLCIO would be like me believing “Moms Against Guns” and their whacked out stats.
Then do your homework, as I've done mine.
There are less than 10,000 currently employed in or around Home Office.
Your information appears to be out of date:
"The Bentonville, Ark. based-company is building a new headquarters in its hometown - a project it announced in September 2017 - that will spread over 300 acres and house its nearly 17,000 employees" [emphasis added] - https://www.reuters.com/article/us-walmart-headquarters/walmart-bets-big-on-attracting-workforce-with-new-hq-campus-idUSKCN1SN21E
And some of them may be doing work for contractors of Walmart rather than Walmart itself - which would make Walmart no less complicit in suppressing American wages with foreign labor.
There are no neighborhoods in Bentonville which have people from India residing there.
Which you know because you've carefully observed every neighborhood in Bentonville? LOL!
No one I know within Home Office or even on the store level has ever seen or spoken to someone from India.......with a claim of 15,000 applicants if they all got in people would notice.
"No one you know" is not exhaustive nor representative.
The site you provided is the AFLCIO Union website.
If you have a more reliable source of info, let's see it. So far all you've put on the table is sourceless and dubious claims.
They’ll figure out a way to get him in line.
Correct......the new HQ is not completed at this time.
Looking forward, many offices and buildings that house Walmart employees and Divisional personnel will be in the new HQ.
As far as what I know.......Bentonville isn’t that big to not know what the hoods look like.
You are correct.......there are plenty of Vendors using H1B workers that provide services for Walmart, ie; computer systems, shipping, etc.
But Walmart itself still maintains a strong southern accent at Home Office.
Look, if you hate Walmart (some people hate Walmart the way the Left hate Trump) DONT SHOP THERE.
Your Pro-Union talking points expose your motivation.
You are clearly a pro-Indian H1B American traitorous idiot.
How much is the Indian tech lobby at Walmart paying you?
Better back read my posts on H1Bs before you start accusing me of being a union plant.
Idiot.
Hell, I’ve used Official USCIS Walmart H1B AND LCA applications.
Union data? Nope.
I guess the US government is lying about this to make the David Chase, the Indian tech lobby and Walmart look bad?
I better?
I don’t have to do a damn thing.
Walmart is a money making venture.
The Unions would love nothing more than to have 1.6 million dues paying members.
Since I retired, I don’t need to engage in Unionist chat.
Not by choice I have been in numerous Unions, I know the tactics well. I also know how they love to attack Walmart for anything and everything.
Remember, name calling is not an effective way to discuss issues.
There are no neighborhoods in Bentonville which have people from India residing there.

More union propaganda?
I guess the local news station, who claims 23,000 Indians living in Bentonville is lying as well?
“The growth includes thousands from India who now call Northwest Arkansas home. Many moved here for employment opportunities such as I.T. jobs within Wal-Mart.”
In India, cricket is the most popular sport, and it is now a big part of the culture in Northwest Arkansas. In the last 10 years, the sport has grown from practicing on makeshift fields in Rogers and Bentonville, to now, a league with dozens of teams competing regionally.
Players with NWA Cricket, who practice in these fields and belong to the league, said they welcome anyone to join and feel the league has been an essential part of making friends within the community.
Remember, name calling is not an effective way to discuss issues.
————————————
Lying about the extent of H1Bs working at Walmart, ignoring plethora of available data makes you a shill for the Indian tech lobby. And is not an effective way to discuss issues, after being called out and corrected by multiple pro-American worker patriots here on FR.
Don’t worry Miss Legree the $15/hr is an idle threat. Why? At that rate a couple both making that would immediately be made ineligible or qualify for any govt. assistance and that the Democrats can’t abide...
The local news sharply contradicts your claims: see post #17.
