There was a surprising name on the NHL waiver wire on Sunday afternoon when the New York Rangers waived defenseman Tony DeAngelo.
Why so surprising? Well, let’s count the ways.
First there is the fact defense is the clear Achilles Heel of this Rangers team, and they aren’t really in a position to potentially be giving away players that could help for nothing. For all of his flaws away from the puck (and there are many), he can be very good — and perhaps even elite — with it. DeAngelo is coming off of a 2019-20 campaign that saw him record more than 50 points and actually receive three Norris Trophy votes.
That alone makes this move surprising.

When a former first round draft pick is traded twice in the next three years, that’s a pretty good indication that the guy has a problem above the neck.

He didn’t play much defense.....always hovering in the high slot in his own zone waiting for a loose puck to go the other way.

That pretty much sums it up. Also, without a team Captain and no other on-ice leadership to solve these issues, D’Angelo is poison in the locker room.
A defenseman who doesn’t play much defense and isn’t named Paul Coffey is going to be a problem in any hockey league!
No dad said Paul Coffey was a jerk in the Hartford Whalers locker room. He hated Hartford...
That’s interesting. I totally forgot that Coffey even played for Hartford, but I just looked it up and he was there for only 20 games in 1996-97!
I think he’s been on the ice for about half of all the goals scored against the Rangers at even strength. They’ve got a few good young d-men in the pipeline and don’t necessarily need to wait around for deAngelo to grow up.
