Hon, you don’t understand. We have cicadas all the time. They make the chirping every summer. But THESE are in addition EN MASSE every 17 years. It is absolutely surreal.
Add in even a simple solar eclipse and it would seem like another world altogether.
Not to mention the absolute mess they create. Crunching on masses of shells everywhere, finding them stuck everywhere, etc.
The sound is like having all those bug sounds channeled into an isolating headset right into your brain.
For us it’s en masse every year. There’s no super year. There’s no mellow year. There’s the massive drone, every year, especially if you have really bushy bushes or a lot of trees in the area. Place I grew up had huge oleanders and there was a window every summer where they would drown out everything. Gotta crank up the stereo and TV, all conversations are yelled. Learn to love the panic sound they make when a bird gets em.
I really miss my Ducks! (used to have about 30 of them)
Those lil partners ate the hell out of bugs, any bugs and they would lead the charge for the Chickens that were just getting seconds or leftovers.
