Cameron Village in Raleigh, a Southeastern shopping destination when it was built in the late 1940s on former Cameron family holdings, will get a new name.

It will be called Village District, dropping its connection to the Cameron family, whose wealthy patriarch was one of the largest holders of enslaved people in North Carolina before the Civil War.

"Reintroducing this destination as Village District aligns with the collective values of our neighbors, patrons, and merchants," Chris Widmayer, vice president of investments for Regency Centers, which owns the shopping center, said in a release Thursday.

"The Village District will bring a renewed sense of community to a property that has been and will remain a pivotal cultural, social, and economic engine for the city and region for many years to come," George York said in the release. York's grandfather, Willie York, developed the property and York Properties still manages it.

Well known NC shopping center, fearing outcry over its name, changes its name to Shopping Center - in the hopes that no one named Shopping or Center ever owned slaves

The name rings a bell: Duke’s famous basketball stadium. Cameron Indoor.

That will never stand.

Cameron! Appears the Cameron family name carries a similar history as that of Northern Virginia’s Lord Fairfax. Difference is, Fairfax hasn’t been smeared. Yet.
I grew up in Cameron Valley, mass housing built in Alexandria, Virginia to accommodate the WWII influx of government workers. My father worked nearby at the torpedo factory and Naval Gun Factory.
Cameron Valley ultimately became a precursor of sorts for low-income housing projects.

“Cameron” is plastered all over roads and buildIngs here in Charlotte, NC. Heck, there’s even a Cameron Wood neighborhood in South Charlotte.

Lefties got some work to do here. With locals voting for Biden 3 to 1, the “re-historying” of the Queen City should start soon.

So, the 70 years in between and 80 years since don’t count for anything?
